C Connor Bedard - Regina Pats, WHL (2023 Draft) Part 5

His 1st assist was absolutely insane. Meh quality so it's harder to see but that's basically the equivalent of a perfect cross in soccer. Saucer pass between 4 guys that none of them had a hope of touching right into his teammates wheel house.

I drove the hour drive to go to this game because it's the last one of Bedards in Edmonton, red deer or Calgary until the NHL and tickets were $30. The entire arena was in absolute shock when he made this play, straight out of Draisaitls playbook and to do it at this age....

Regina plays 5 more times in Alberta in regular season.

i just dont see where the problem is really, I have the opinion that a Leo would do better. Why does that bother you or any one else? I'm not even saying Bedard wont be good, im not saying he wont be generational. Im only saying that Leo in my opinion would do better (overall). Why is this a problem, how does this affect anyone's life i don't understand. I'm i forcing my ideaology on any one? No, its an opinion based on facts both objective and subjective. Why are we stretching this.

If you want to debate me on the gap, then lets do it. No, the gap is not as big as you're saying. Its a pure fantasy, an idea that has been fueled by the media and overhyped by the fans. Slovakia almost beat Canada and they dint even had Slaf.

No the gap is not big, Bedard's game is not a guaranteed to be transferable in the NHL right away, who knows maybe never. Its a different level, its a different speed, less space, goalies don't leave much room.

Im sorry man, it took Slovakia 1 really good goalie to shut down (almost) the whole team Canada. The game Canada won 11-1 where everyone lost their panties that night was a different goalie.... the moment they put a big dude who's actually good at goaltending Bedard struggled scoring, he had alot of opportunities to do so and only managed 2 againts Slovakia.... yeah Slovakia...

So imagine this now... Bedard playing for a crappy team and facing NHL defenses and NHL goalies... he's not going to get the same amount of chances to score goals, neither the space nor will the goalies look like swiss cheeze.

Matter of fact i dont believe in NHL generational talents any more who aren't at least 6.1. McDavid is the guy right now and there's no body that will come close to him. The way the league is setup, i don't see any rookie right now scoring 100 pts in their first season like a Crosby, Ovy or McDavid... because thats what he's being compared too.

You're free to have whatever opinion you want, just like the people posting here are free to point out the flaws in it. Pretty much all of the scouts and GM's and experts (which you and I are not), have pointed out that the gap is significant. I'm simply reiterating that the gap isn't close, and at this point if a GM drafted anyone other than him, they would be run out of whatever town they are in.

That doesn't mean he can't end up being the better player. It's not an impossible feat. Just very unlikely given what we've seen to this point.

What do you make of Slovakia's game in the semis then?
What about Czech Rep in the finals?
and Sweden vs Czech Rep?

I think its pretty obvious the games in the finals were treated differently by the euro teams at least. I think team Canada were going pedal to the metal all the way.
Huh? Slovakia beat USA, they were a very good team. Bedard still had three pts including a dazzling game winner.

The Czechs were then top team in the group stage were they not? Including a win against the same Canada team who beat them in the finals? What is this supposed to mean?

Why are you even bringing up team performances? Especially one where TC won gold on the backs on Bedard blasting the competition not seen by any player, never mind a 17 year old, in the past like 30 years?

Did you watch the game???? “Struggled” scoring as he proceeded to score to and one of the best goals in World Junior history, in addition to a goal that broke numerous records in the first period

There's a guy who scored 70 goals in the OHL in 2017... he's playing in the AHL right now and scores 15ish goals a season.

I appreciate your rationality, openness to entertain the thought and have a discussion over this like 2 normal people. Through our ignorances we'll discover the truth.

Notable players below 6"1':

Kaprizov
Kucherov
Kane
Hughes
Gaudreau
Crosby
Stamkos
Marner
Panarin

The league has never been more friendly to below average height players.

Awesome,

now the argument was: Upcoming Generational Talents, not notable players.

As for your list.
Crosby is the only Generational talent of that list, the rest are elite, superstars... none fit the bill of a Gen talent.

McDavid is 6.1, Ovy and Malkin are 6.3

One player has scored 70 or more goals in the OHL since Lindros did it in 1991, and that's John Tavares, who is very much not in the AHL scoring 15ish goals a season.

Who? Alex DeBrincat led the OHL in goals in 2016-2017 with 65. Between you posting a video that counters your own argument and now inventing a 70-goal-scoring OHL flameout, I am beginning to doubt your expertise in grading players.

I'm assuming he means WHL and is talking about Jayden Halbegewachs who was 19 at the time. Which is ridiculous. You can't compare a 17 year old's production to a guy who's almost 20 and far more physically developed. When that guy was the same age as Bedard he had 8 points in 59 games lol. Even if you could Bedard still blows him out of the water. Bedard has produced at about the rate Halbegewachs did since he was 15.

There's a reason we take age into consideration rather than drafting whichever overager is leading a CHL league in scoring.

You're overfitting to a very small sample size and already selectively removing outliers.

Yeah, that's what figured looking into it more.

Did he do that at 17 years old?

Using your logic, Carlsson will bust because Oscar Moller is currently blowing Carlsson out of the water in SHL scoring and couldn't stick it in the NHL either.

is he not being compared to Crosby, McDavid already?

Because the argument is that "the gap" is bigger than Madona's teeth gap, drafting any one else at 1st OA will get you fired.

I think he's more of a Kane

I mean good lord look what Leo is doing at 1:33, a guy his size doing that kind of stuff... holy smocks man i just don't understand people sometimes.

Bedard is scoring more, with a vastly worse team/teammates and being a year younger than Kane was when he was in the OHL which is also a higher scoring league

Once again you've missed the mark on a comparable

Leo is going to be a great player, I don't think anyone is knocking his play at all. Just 2 different tiers at the moment is all. This draft should rival 2015 in how good the 1st round will be.

Yeah, but Mattias Tedenby had similar SHL production as Carlsson has now, and he was out of the NHL by 25, so how good can Carlsson actually be?
