Extremely revisionist. Laf was CHL player of the year twice...just as same as Crosby. He wasn't hyped as much as the Kid but just a tier below.

People continue to confuse hype and actual performance. Laf was hyped way more than Matthews. Matthews got to his potential faster than Laf, but there's still time for Laf.
Crosby did it at 16/17 and Laf did it at 17/18 though. Crosby also did it in MUCH more dramatic fashion.

Lafreniere was definitely highly regarded but I don’t think there was a huge gap between him and Matthews in terms of hype as a prospect

I think the lack of hype for Am was basically that he was plying in Switzerland, he would have destroyed the CHL and had a 10-6-3-9 line at the WC that year.

I don't think this will happen anymore
Probably not. So hopefully it's not Arizona.

You're totally right. I'm sure Bedard will be laughing... when he's driving his new convertible, with the top down, wearing shorts and sandals to practice in January.
I mean, other than Shane Doan for family reasons, I've never seen anyone itching to desperately play in Arizona for these reasons.

You've heard of weather being a factor in why some players would rather play south of the border though right?
Why would that not apply to Arizona?

Because Arizona is a dysfunctional franchise, with a small fanbase, an owner whose main priority for owning the team is for the interests of his gambling business, playing in a 5000 seat college rink with no NHL-size arena deal confirmed as of yet beyond a mere negotiation stage, and who for all of these reasons highly unlikely to be competitive for the foreseeable future as the team will absolutely bleed money unless they get their shit together.

I don't know which fantasy land you live in, or what drug you're smoking, but literally nobody else on this board who knows anything about hockey thinks that playing for the Coyotes is even remotely attractive right now.

You wish that a guy like this would go to a team like Vancouver. BC boy, huge fan of the Canucks, would be the prefect face of the franchise for the next 10-20 years.

He was also a pretty big kid whose skating took some time to mature, especially in comparison to Eichel. The upside was always there, but as a 16-17 year old he just had a few more steps to take to get to the next level.

I think Bedard is on the same tier of prospect as Matthews and Eichel were - franchise level centers. He lacks the size of those two, which could limit him if he doesn't add another gear (I suspect he will), but he's probably got a more refined skillset at 17 than either of them.

Obviously things have turned out better for Matthews than Eichel, and if Bedard ends up as good as Matthews, his fans should be elated. I think it's quite likely that Bedard doesn't quite reach Matthews' current level, as he was pretty much in McDavid territory this year...

That's an understatement, Matthews is on an all-time-great NHL player career trajectory.

--

As for Bedard v Matthews as shooters, AM has a big advantage in height and wingspan. We shall see if the smaller Bedard can do those curl and drag shots around NHL defensemen with long reach.
