It’s likely maturity. He’s still so young.
He’s not quite mature enough to dominate on his own, with very little help around him and the opposition’s focus fully on him.
But put him with some talent who can open things up a bit and take the pressure off; and bedard -> :eek2:

I agree. I think McDavid was able to dominate league play at the same age because he had Dane Fox and Connor Brown on his team to take some of the focus off. Plus, McDavid's skating ability gives him quite a bit more autonomy offensively.

He made the world junior team. He will be the second 16 year old play for Canada I've seen play. I'm optimistically expecting him to put up 5 points with 4 against Austria and Germany hopefully he can be a key player. But i'm not really expecting it.

It all depends on how he is deployed. I wouldn’t trust any Team Canada coach to use him effectively, but especially not Dave Cameron.

Personally, I would reunite the Stankoven-McTavish-Bedard unit that was so effective at the U18s. That was and can be an effective matchup line with Bedard set as the clear offensive play-driver.

I’m a Bedard fan, and it’s awesome he made the team, but he’s not gonna play a big role - he’s just 16. Very rare to make team Canada at all at that age. I believe he’s just the 3rd 16 year old to make team Canada in the past 20 years, along with Sid (5 points in 6 games) and McDavid (4 in 7)? And as good as Bedard is, he’s not Sid/McDavid level.

Some of the forwards Bedard will be competing with for ice time:
  • Cole Perfetti (19 years old)
  • Shane Wright (17)
  • Mason McTavish (18)
  • Kent Johnson (19)
  • Dylan Guenther (18)
  • Jake Neighbours (19)
  • Mavrik Bourque (19)
  • Ridly Greig (19)
Bedard is awesome, but 16, and the team is loaded with very good 18 and 19 year olds, mostly 1st round picks themselves, some very high 1sts. I think he’ll be able to contribute, but really doubt he’s going to play a major role.

Watching his game last night...he is so damn dynamic. The point totals from this year in the WHL are that much more confusing seeing him lol that team has to be an absolute dumpster fire for him not to be producing...I can't see any other explanation.

The 2nd best forward on the Pats is another 16 year old (just turned 16 a few weeks ago too) in Tanner Howe. I would argue the 2 best players on the team are probably Ryker Evans and Stanislav Svozil but they're defensemen and can only drive the play so much. There's just not that much talent around him. When's the last time a CHL team's 2 best forwards were both 16?

Of course.
But this will be huge for his development. I see Bedard representing Canada many times more.

Excited Connor made the team! Looking at Canada’s roster I think it is a solid group but there are two omissions that surprise me.

Firstly is Brandt Clarke who I thought played well enough in the U-18s and along with being drafted 8th overall would have been prioritized over other players , His Size and Puck moving is great too, has his play regressed this year or something?

Second is Matt Savoie especially now that Bedard has made it which means his youth wouldn’t be as much of an issue you’d think? I understand you can’t have a team of only skill but with the way Savoie has been lighting up the WHL this year along with his dynamic skating I would have thought he’d be able to hold his own.

haven’t been following training camp at all but my understanding is that neither of those guys were even invited to camp?

Yeah got to think hes there for the experience/development. Cant imagine he gets ice over the above mentioned guy unless theres an injury or two

Two very glaring omissions. But Hockey Canada has a history of it, so it's not surprising.

Especially when all of Canada's dmen are left handed and Clarke was right handed and plays the right side.

I still believe politics is the main reason Savoie didn't make it.

I think you will be surprised. He was clearly a more dangerous offensive weapon in the U-18 medal rounds than Guenther, Wright and McTavish. If he’s given a chance he will make the most of it. That’s a big if tho

How tall do you guys think Bedard will get to? He is listed at 5'9 and is 16.5 years old.

For reference, I was the same height at that age and now I'm 5'10.5.

I grew 2 and a half inches (from 5'7 to 5'9.5) from 16 to 18. Definitely a decent chance he hits near 5'11 by combine but at the end of the day who knows, purely genetics.

Don't know why Connor Bedard rocking McDavid's #17 Hockey Canada jersey came as a surprise...

It should have been burned into my memory based solely on the sweetest backhanded snipe in the GMG at the U18s.

But my expectations for Connor this tournament are still somewhat modest. couple of goals and helpers. anything more than that is just gravy.
