The kid has looked stellar so far this pre-season. Quotes:

Tyler Johnson
"(Point is) definitely a special player," Johnson said. "Just watching him, he's got the skill, he's got the work ethic. He's got everything. The biggest thing, in talking to him, is how mature he is, where he is mentally, it's pretty special. He's going to have a heck of a future."

Benoit Groulx
"He's not only a skilled player, I think he's a fierce competitor," Groulx said of Point. "When he's in the battle for the puck, when he's in the race for the puck, when he's driving the net to beat his opponent to get open, he's someone that wants to make a difference. He's someone who wants to make the play, wants to score the goal, wants to make that pass. That's the compete he's got, and I think that's what made the difference in his game. When you bring that skill level and that compete, you have a player like him."

Cooper
His hockey sense is "off the charts. You can see he's going to be a player."

Rick Bowness
"Last year he impressed us, and he's a much better player this time around," Bowness said. "He's more confident, he's stronger, he's quicker. He's better in all facets of the game. He's a smart hockey player. Guys with his speed and skills and hockey sense … they're going to play (in the NHL). When is yet to be determined."

Will he make the team? Check out this story from today:

My god tampa is good a drafting and developpe young talent

And the best thing is, HF Boards is missing out on every single one of them until it's to late :D

Anthony Cirelli is already looking like the next one in line.
Well and with Libor Hajek we seem to finally have drafted a high profile defender. That kid is a monster IMO.

He's playing well enough to make the team, easily. He's such a distinct spark plug player with absolutely wonderufl skill. He was the best forward in the WHL by far last year so this doesn't really come as a surprised. However, I see the Lightning starting him in the A.

Point and Hunt were fun to watch together last year. It's to bad we only got 1 season of them. Another guy who has talent but dropped because of his size.

agreed... Tampa has such a good routine going with these young studs that they have each year. Seems like they always take their time and give them a year or 2 in the AHL and it does wonders to their development

If Kucherov's contract talks extend into the regular season, do you think Point stays up?

I remember him being pretty hyped on here. Pretty sure a lot of people knew we got a steal after he fell due to size.

Hard to believe he wasn't picked until the 3rd round in a draft that looks pretty shallow depth wise. What was the knocks on him on draft day aside from size?

It's a shame Point had the lingering injuries too.. both could have been 2+ ppg.

Honestly, nothing... it was all due to his size. I believe he was 5'9 160 in his draft year.

He was unreal when he broke into the WHL as a 15 year old in the playoffs and then just kept getting better and better. You'd think by now, NHL teams wouldnt care as much about size since we are seeing more and more real small guys excel.... but this was yet another example of size causing an unreal player to drop

Yeah they were a hell of a team. Putting point with an elite finisher in the NHL could really help him succeed. He was good for the Warriors alone but once he was with Hunt he really helped him realize his full potential.

Anyone else think he might be used as trade bait to get rid of a bad contract? They really need to make room for Kucherov, and it's pretty late in the offseason. I'd imagine it'll be pretty hard for the lightning to make space

I think the Bolts have a couple of those. Point with Stamkos or Kucherov ..

His contract is dirt cheap so I think Yzerman would want to see what he has in him before dealing him. He might be a great fit in the top 9.

With Callahan's injury, there's an outside shot Point can make the team. Especially if TB has to deal a forward to make room for the Kucherov contract.

If they think he's good enough, they might WANT to deal a forward to deal with their cap situation. He can help solve their problem.

I think (and there's a lot of argument about this on our board) that we're more likely to trade a forward than a defenseman. We might also trade Bishop though. But it definitely looks like Point has impressed the staff enough to make the team. So, if there's room, he'll probably play for TB. But if there's not, Yzerman doesn't really make room for people. He likes guys getting reps in Syracuse before cracking the NHL.

I feel like the most likely outcome is Point plays in Syracuse, but before camp I thought that was a lock. Now, he's played himself into the conversation, it seems.
