This is exactly how I see it also. Sure Matthews will most likely be a good NHL player. I just see too many problems with his capability to step up at the moments when he is most needed. I have absolutely nothing against him, but so far he hasn't also shown the winning kind of qualities that I see as the most important part of being a real top class hockey player. Could be of course that I am after all wrong with my estimations on Matthews. But this is anyway a strong gut feeling I have about him so far. And usually these strong impressions have been after all quite close to how things have turned out with most of the players I have seen. But only time will tell. I won't definitely be unhappy if I am wrong after all.

Why haven't I heard of you before?

Vancouver talk radio hosts basically said as a fact that if Matthews and Eichel were in the same draft, that Matthews would be picked over Eichel.

Any truth to this? Is Matthews ceiling higher that Eichel?

I think its close. You have to remember Matthews is a year younger than Eichel though so its hard to compare at this point.

I say Eichel is still the clear #2, while Matthews would be the clear #3.

Id say their ceilings are (if scoring stays how it is right now):

Eichel 50g-50a-100p
Matthews 40g-50a-90p

Just for fun, I'd say Mcdavid is 40g-70a-110p.

As a Canucks fan, I'd be ecstatic with Matthews this draft, someone let Daly know the Canucks still havn't had a first overall.:handclap:

There in the same tier, same as Stamkos and Tavares as prospects. Eichel is more dynamic with better skating, Matthews has a better 2 way game and slightly better awareness, both have elite shots and a case can be made for either. Matthews out performed Eichel at similar ages, but the 1997 USNDP (Tkachuk, Bracco, White, Fischer, Roslovic, Kunin, Tage Thompson, McAvoy plus Werenski and Hanifin prior to them accelerating) probably had more talent than the 1996 grouping (Larkin, Milano, and Tuch). Personally, I'd take Matthews, but I wouldn't hold it against someone if they preferred Eichel. I see Matthews as arguably the most complete centerman to enter the draft in awhile, along with guys like Toews and Barkov, and he has a very high offensive ceiling.

He's outperformed him on the USDT. In fact he's out performed anyone on that squad for a record setting points run.
We won't know how he stacks up until his first season and it depends on who he sets up shop with. Eichel has an advantage of playing with solid young guys compared to some teams.

I don't know how anyone can state that as a "fact." Since Vancouver will likely be one of the teams with a relatively good chance in the lottery, maybe #1 in the inverse standings, it helps maintain interest during the tail end of a miserable season, however. Plus, if it was Pratt, well, enough said.

And, by the way, I like Matthews. If the Leafs are lucky enough to get him, I'll be delighted. He's very good and appears in the same conversations as Eichel. Higher upside? We'll see.

Leafs have only had one 1st OA pick and have been around much much longer. Get outta here, Canucks. :yo:

Ok but the NHL draft for ALL players only started in like 1970 when the Canucks came into the league. Canucks have never had the 1st overall pick.

My God he'd be perfect for Leafs right now.

xxxx - Mathews - Marner
xxxx - Nylander - xxxx

JvR fitting in somewhere there potentially to, and maybe Kadri.

Still need a young LW option. Maxime Comtois next year could be great.

If the canucks can manage to get this guy... Their centre depth is looking pretty damn good.

Sedin
Mathews
Horvat
Sutter
McCann too. Really, you guys have enough centres, but are short on wingers - hopefully the Leafs win 1st overall, you guys can win 2nd and take Laine :)

Canucks are too crap to win anything before the Sedins retire. When looking at their needs the Sedins need to be factored out

????

Sutter

3 2nd/3rd line 6 centres, no team is ever going to win a cup with that Canucks centre line up. They need a 1C even worse than the Leafs IMHO.
