All the goalies in NLA are swiss or playing with swiss license, anyone know if imports are banned?
15/20 top scorers are imports but all the goalies are domestic, with Switzerlands goalie production its no wonder that players with good shot like Matthews score a lot.

No they are not, but usually teams don't want to "waste" a "foreigner license" (sorry, that's really how it's called here) for a goalkeeper.

However I don't think that this really affects the quality of goal tending. There are a couple of really strong goalies in the league. Again we have to compare Matthews to other ex-NHl players to appreciate how strong he really is...

Gotta say thats a terrible comparison to Sequin. Sequin is much faster and Matthews plays a more methodical game.

Aside from a highlight video has anyone seen his highlights from his time with the NTDP and how as a 16 year old he went up against 21-22 year olds against Michigan State when he got called up to play with the U-18's in 2013-14. Or the U-18's last year and WJC this year where he dominated board play and was so effective with eluding players and retrieving pucks in his skates. Those are the little things that people notice that watch him play full games. Besides scoring my personal favorite about him is he's never trapped, and so hard to take the puck from.

he was over a ppg as a 16 year old, almost a ppg as a 16 year old with the u18 squad. last year he had 116 pts in 60 games as a u18 which is better than kane, kessel, and eichel. also if i remeber right, and i didn't get to see him that much but i did watch his stats, he was over a goal per game vs college.

Goaltender development actually is one of the leagues stronger suits, but nevermind.

Goalies aren't really that bad. There are some ex-NHL goalies in the league:

Martin Gerber
Cristobal Huet
Tobias Stephan

Plus the swiss goalies (Flüeler, Genoni, Mayer et all) are at least on par with the mentioned ones. Of course, those aren't world class goalies, but still quite challenging.

Just an interesting observation.. Lot of tap-ins and some weak goals far-away. I a little disappointed on that highlight video because Matthews should be 1st pick. But we will see...

yeah I bet McDavid didn't have any easy goals against crappy Canadian kid goalies in the CHL.

Shame on you Matthews.

So two last games of the regular season have been played if I am not mistaken.

Matthews got 3 points in the first one and 1 point in the last.

So he ended up with a ppg of 1.28. Only beaten by Pierre Marc Bouchard (unless counting two guys that played 7 and 11 games). That is a pretty amazing feat given the competition consisting of many ex NHL'ers and KHL'ers not to mention all the pretty good players that used to play in the swedish and finish leagues. Safe to say he beat the expectations by far :handclap:

It's ****ing hilarious that you guys are whining about the quality of goaltenders in the NLA when CHL goaltenders are a thing.

True, I'm a huge Marner and Leaf fan so I watch a lot of Knights games and, man ... most of these goalies are helpless.

What Mattews is doing against men, and some veteran goalies in Switzerland, is very impressive to me.

If this guy was in the OHL he'd probably be the league leader and maybe all of the CHL leader in ppg.

Yeah, I mean a lot of the goals William Nylander scores in the AHL would be saved by an NHL goaltender. It's just the nature of non-NHL leagues.

True, but not even that, Matthews would also dominate board play and make easy work of some of those 17-18 year old defenders. Very few people would be able to take the puck from him cleanly.

I don't even want to imagine what Matthews would have done to the WHL this year

Ah yes, because the best player is determined by the quality of their highlight reel.

Not the best player, but it is still a useful tool (one of many) in evaluating a player. It gives you an idea of his upper end skill level. It doesn't tell you about the holes in his game or other issues, but it can tell you who has soft hands, great vision, fast feet.

CHL goal of the year will be Marner's goal this year. I think last year it was Domi's goal. It is not a co-incidence that the highlight reel goals are scored by the top talents.

Indeed. I used youtube and could easily tell Rob Schremp would be the next Gretzky. Based on continuous youtubeing I can assure you he is in fact the next Gretzky, he just choses to be in a various array of other leagues. Why dominate only one when you can do them all?

Perhaps Edmonton do use youtube come to think about it?
