Don't know if the Leafs see Nylander as a C or wing going forward, but Matthews would give them the legit 1C that can accelerate any rebuild.

Id say Nylander will be a C, Marner a winger. Nylander is already around ~190lbs, so size isnt really an issue at this point. He's been dominating the AHL as a centre, and they put him at C for his NHL debut.

In that case, him and Matthews would be an awesome 1-2 punch.

This is probably right.

But having Matthews as the #1, and Nylander as the #2, would be dynamite, going forward.

Yeah nylander was also 50%+ on faceoff first nhl game and back checked well, I know only one game but he looks like a centre at the ahl stage and thus far at the nhl stage so if by a divine miracle leafs get Matthews, they would be the 1-2 punch for sure

I didn't know there is a lottery for the top 5 picks? Would the last 5 teams in the standings get a shot at Matthews?

There is a lottery for the top 3 picks, and yes, every team that doesnt make the playoffs has a shot at Matthews.

Like he said above me, there is a lottery for the top 3 picks, meaning there are 3 lottery drawings. All non-playoff teams are in the lottery pool. Therefore, every non-playoff team has some statistical chance at winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd overall. The team that finishes last only guarantees a top 4 pick as they could theoretically fall 3 spots if 3 other teams win each of the lotteries.

They could definitely play the power play together too. Put Nylander along the wall, Matthews down low, someone like Marner or Kapanen floating at the circle for one timers. Might be decent

Question;
If you are team loaded with C's and win the lottery - do you play Matthews in the 3rd/4th line spot, shift to wing, start in AHL or other?

He seems like a guy that needs to be developed as a center and may be stunted if played on the wing.

Starting at wing one 2nd line or even first. Hes NHL ready (AHL isnt neccessary) and I dont see how 1 season of wing would stunt anything. Good way to learn the NHL

Depends on the exact center's we're talking about and how their lines are constructed. In your example I would put him on Malkin or Crosby's wing and be done with it. On another team, maybe the 2nd or 3rd line center would be the way to go.

Forgive me if this has been asked a million times, but looking for opinions on where Matthews ranks compared to previous 1st's. Even on a tier scale. I've given my opinion, but just looking to see what the consensus is.

Say going back as far as Crosby.

Definitely higher.

Interesting. Which of the recent first overall picks do you (and others who have seen him play consistently) think he will be better than? You already said Hall/Seguin, how does he compare to:

Patrick Kane
Steven Stamkos/Drew Doughty
John Tavares/Victor Hedman
RNH/Gab Landeskog
Nathan Mackinnon/Alexander Barkov
Aaron Ekblad/Sam Reinhart

Where would he project amongst these players, not as prospects, as their current day players.

in my terribly uninformed opinion

since crosby (2005)

crosby
mcdavid
tavares
kane
stamkos
matthews
ekblad
hall
mackinnon
nuge
e johnson
yak

being better than those players will be extremely tough. I think its entirely possible he tops out as a tavares level player though

I would throw eichel between ekblad and hall

Just a heads-up for those interested, the game between SC Bern and ZSC is on public tv (SF2 in german, RTS2 in french) at 20.15 CET.

It will probably be quite the pain to watch it outside Switzerland tough, but it should work to access the services of wilmaa or zattoo via a swiss proxy. So if you want to try, it's on you own nerves risk.

I mostly agree, but I think you have MacKinnon way too low. I'd have him right after Stamkos, before Matthews. I also think Eichel falls right after McDavid, in front of Tavares, but I agree with the rest.
