And for the record, I interviewed Matthews for an article last month and not once did he bring it up so he's not even making it known to media about his heritage.

And there's a lot more I interviewed him about than what's included in the article.

Unless you asked him about it and he avoided the question, I don't see how that matters. Not a lot of 17 year old boys are going to bring that up unprompted. You could look at Seth Jones or Darnell Nurse as a recent example. Jones answered questions about his race when he was asked, but didn't bring it up otherwise.

And as for looks, I've always thought Matthews looked mixed, so this news wasn't surprising to me.

Believe me, I asked him a lot of questions about his youth and how he got into hockey. He never brought it up or anything remotely close to his heritage. It wil be a non-factor for when he is drafted. Has Jones or Nurse inspired a significant amount of attention because of their background? No. Everything is about hockey. No one cares where they came from. All everyone cares about is where they are and right now Matthews is playing for Team USA.

The biggest background info about Matthews the media will make a big deal out of is that he's from a non-traditional hockey market. That's it.

This is Jones' second year in the league! Nurse hasn't even made the NHL!

Look at PK Subban, then. If you try and tell me he hasn't inspired little black kids in Montreal to try hockey, I will rage quit.

And asking how someone got into hockey isn't even CLOSE to prompting them to talk about their ethnic background.

It doesn't really matter what a journalist asks them. Honestly journalists really over think how important they are.

If a young kid can related to Matthews or Jones because of who they are, that's all that matters.

This isn't Canada where hockey is already big. We are talking about non-traditional hockey markets. Has Seth Jones had a big impact in Nasvhille? No.

My point remains, when the draft comes around in June of 2016, no one will care that Matthews' mom is from Mexico. They will only care that he is a good hockey player.

How could you possibly know that? Have you asked all the kids in the market he's going to?

This is Seth Jones' SECOND YEAR in the NHL. Are you in Nashville, visually counting how many black kids sign up for hockey? Do you have some numbers to back you up? I'm going to guess you're just talking out of your ass.

It's like you have some crusade against the idea that representation matters.

To be fair, the people suggesting it will have a big impact are making just as definitive statements without asking the kids in the market's these guys play in either...

No one's saying he definitely will, we're saying he COULD. Whereas one poster is shooting down the possibility entirely.

Any Vancouver basketball fan could tell you what Steve Nash could have meant to the Grizzlies. Matthews could be that to the Coyotes. But, thats a big if.

I think Matthews would turn the Coyotes around. He'd make as much of an impact as Doan has done to this franchise.

Well, watching him now in the WJC... this kid looks legit, very poised with the puck and very dangerous

Definitely. You can tell he has a ton of hockey sense and a ton of great tools. But if people actually think he's a better prospect than Eichel, I think they are kidding themselves.

And you're judging this based on 8 minutes of ice time?

You don't need 20 games of viewing to tell that he's not the same level of athlete. You need 5 strides. That's not a knock on him. Eichel is a generational prospect. This always seemed like a Canadian media creation to prove how Eichel couldn't possibly be better than McDavid, after all, there is another American who is better than him. I think we can all put that idea to rest.

So I guess your 5 strides worth of viewing is worth more than the opinion of professional scouts.

It's his first ever WJC game. I'd give him a few games to adjust before coming to any conclusions based on 1 viewing.

I didn't feel like Eichel last year looked much more like a generational prospect than Matthews does in his first shifts at the WJC. So, yeah, I would say it takes quite a bit longer.

Agree to disagree. You could see it the first time you ever saw Eichel take a stride.

That Eichel is the better physical skill package is undeniable, but hockey is a lot more than just physical skills. Do I think Eichel is better? Yes. But I cant wait to see what Matthews does in the NCAA and NHL.

Scotty Gomez is a Calder winning, NHL All-Star and 2-time Stanley Cup Champion, did he spark a rise in mexican or colombian hockey interest?
