McKenzie said that some scouts believe if Matthews was eligible this season he'd go ahead of Eichel.

Edit: if it wasn't McKenzie, then it was a Sportsnet segment.. I was half asleep but remembered hearing that.

Doesn't shock me. Matthews isn't as flashy as Eichel but it's just as effective. I'd probably take Eihel first but only by a hair.

This is one player I really want to get picked by his hometown team. I wonder if a star from Arizona playing in Arizona is what it takes to make hockey popular in the desert....

That's pretty high praise, coming from you. Never seen Matthews play. Who is a stylistic comparison?

There is no current NHLer to whom Matthews compares well enough for me to say without giving you a false impression of his game. He's just one of those players you gotta watch to understand. The way he flows with the game is quite sublime. Unlike someone like McDavid or Eichel, who dominate the game, Matthews plays with the game. It's weird to try to explain.

Regardless, I'm excited for everyone to see him at the WJC. I hope he had a good showing so I don't look bad.

I'm definitely intrigued. So is his game based pretty much entirely on his hockey IQ, or does he have some physical traits that help, such as explosive skating, strength, etc.? I'll be watching him for sure, heard great things about the guy.

6'2 200 lbs and great on the boards.

Yeesh... so there's a decent chance he could keep growing too. He's already got a good couple inches and like 40-50 lbs on me, and he's 3 years younger.

YUp, would not be ridiculous to think he's 215-220 lbs by the start of his first NHL season.

I've seen both Eichel & Mathews play in tournaments in Sweden and I have to say Mathews impressed me quite a bit more. I'm not really a huge fan of Eichel though, but I'm definitely a fan of this guy.

****ing cut off date. If this guy were in this draft with Eichel and McDavid....

I'm unfortunately a mite too young to have a firm grasp on a prime Pierre Turgeon.

LOL, that makes me feel old. Turgeon in his prime was a guy who, to me, played within the flow of the game but would create scoring chances out of seemingly nothing with this vision, his passing, and his positioning. I'm not extremely familiar with Matthews' game yet, but it sounds like he's a little bit better of a battler along the boards than Turgeon was, though.

Crazy that he's from Arizona. Big middle finger to those who are so against the expansion in the Sun Belt. Say what you want about the semantics of some of the teams, but it is clearly working to introduce new kids to the game. An elite prospect (possible #1 pick) coming out of Scottsdale, Arizona is incredible.

Those highlights look so damn dominant. Obviously you have to take highlights with a grain of salt, but it just looks he does whatever he wants to out there.
