Glad to hear it. I don't know much about the way USAH handles underagers/double underagers, but Matthews seems like a special prospect, and it'll be great to (hopefully) watch him live.

I can't recall the last double underager to play for the US, but if Matthews were born 3 days earlier he would be eligible for the draft this year.

Looking forward to seeing him in the World Juniors, seems like Eichel is taking the spotlight away from Matthews.

McKenzie said that some scouts believe if Matthews was eligible this season he'd go ahead of Eichel.

Edit: if it wasn't McKenzie, then it was a Sportsnet segment.. I was half asleep but remembered hearing that.

No, he was a double underager.

The way I've heard it, an underager at the U20 level is a player that will still be eligible to play in the following U18 WJC. A double-underager would be a U17 age group player; a player that's still 16 when the tournament starts. I can't think of a single 16 year old to play for the US at the U20 WJC in the past 15 years.

I expect Matthews to be there and he could certainly end up making an impact.

Yes. that's what I thought.

He's a 96 how was he a double underager?

I thought the definition of an underager is that you are eligible to play the tournament next year as well. That's the reason why I thought Eichel was a double underager last WJC. :)
