Hopefully these new guys (Granlund, Barkov etc.) can succeed in the NHL. Our player production after 1983 has been absolute garbage. That's a 10 year black hole of prospect production. It seems things are trending up for us and hopefully that continues.
Well "Nuori Suomi"-project started in 1987. Yay all can play even if you suck.

I have personal experience of the project from late 80's/early 90's...though different sport. It was unbeliavable. We the players who could play (experience of few years) sat down too much and there were players playing who literally had started the sport few weeks ago. We started to drop in standings and few of us got tired and quit.

Despite the recent increase in prospects, I don't think we will a see Finnish prospect who could crack the TOP-20 in NHL scoring in the foreseeable future.

I'd blame two things: poor coaching on junior lever and the Meidän Peli (Our Game) -ideology. The latter will be especially devastating as it kills speed and individual creativity. It's quite a popular ideology among junior coaches these days, but it's not suited at all for developing NHL-talent.

Good prospects should just bolt to Sweden or CHL.

What is this "Meidän Peli" thing that is being mentioned all the time? Is there something unique the way we play the game and therefore not to be changed?

Depends on the team and coaches. There numerous examples at Jatkoaika where the teams didn't read the Nuori Suomi doctrine as such but as only guidelines which they chose to ignore. The real problem is and has been for a long time the quality of coaching, clearest examples are the lack of skilled big players than can skate and the general lack in shooting quality throughout Finnish hockey.

It's supposed to be our "weapon" against the more individually talented teams, based on puck control that essentially denies the opposition scoring chances. Basically FC Barcelona on ice regarding to the basic philosophy. We already won a gold medal two years with it, in case you missed. However, it's not unbeatable if our teams don't have the required skill level to play it. Sweden's intense forecheck cause problems on those dmen not used to such where as Russia have chosen to counter it with an extremely passive neutral zone trap. In juniors it doesn't restrict offense, at least it's not meant to since it mostly consists of defensive and neutral zone break-outs and puck movement. It develops the passing and puck handling skill of juniors at least. The bigger challenge is the development of the offensive zone game which Meidän Peli doesn't cover so much.

Yeah, I was able to gather that it refers to a gameplan. But what is so extraordinary about it that it is referred to as vaguely as our game? Sounds like a gimmick created by the media.

As for FC Barcelona on ice... Don't be silly. Our national team and FCB have nothing in common.

Size? :sarcasm:

I came in here expecting to read about Barkov, and realized somehow I had ended up in a thread about Barcelona FC club instead. WEIRD.

- Barkov's skating is a weakness at the moment
- his skating isn't a problem in his club team and SM-Liiga due to many teams using slower tempo puck control hockey
- puck control hockey referred to in Finnish hockey circles as Our Game/Meidän Peli
- basic philosophy of such system shares similarities with Barca's style of ball control though it does not turn hockey into a mock up of handball as Barca's games tend to be

Up to date now? :D

This thread is an embarrassment..

I don't even remember when the last Finn was drafted in the top 3 like I believe Barkov will be and he is projected to be picked. It doesn't matter how bad the Finnish league is or what type of game they play. No reason to compare him to even guys like Granlund or even more stupidly to 4-5th round picks like Pulkkinen or Rajala.

I believe West Brom may beba better comparison than FC Barcelona. There are many sports teams that try to keep possession of the ball/puck but it seems inaccurate to compare the strategy with FC Barcelona, who are arguably the best possession team in the history of soccer. While their strategy deserves to get praise they are not the only team trying to keep the ball in the world and they also benefit from world class personnel perfectly fitting their system.

Sorry, back on topic... ;)

Still OT: Well they were the first team that came to mind off the top of my head. Swansea might have been a better example talentwise. :D

Anywhere I can get a stream for Tappara's game today?

Some Leafs fans would love to get a look at Sasha in action :)

barkov goes to the penalty box. only his 3rd 2 minute penalty this year.

ps there is not a stream

He always tries to poke the puck with his stick instead of playing the body so he doesn't get lot of penalties. (just like datsyuk)

Barkov scores! He is officially youngest player ever to score 40 points and only 17 year old ever to do it. 1 point till new record with most point as draft eligible. Barkov has now 40points in 43games and theres about 2 periods to go.

Olli Jokinen had 41points in 50games in his draft year playing in 1 dimensional offense only game. Olli Jokinen was about 1 calendar year older to score those points. There is still chance for 50points which would be unreal for him but he needs another streak for that.

I truly think Granlund's struggles at the NHL level could drop Barkov's position in the draft.

I don't see it. Granlund was just as good in the AHL as he was in the SM-Liiga. I don't see ANY other similarities between Barkov and Granlund
