virtanen is younger
If you aren't sure about a player's age, there are a bunch of great hockey database sites like hockeysfuture.com, eliteprospects.com or hockeydb.com. If you google a player name one of them will usually be a top option.

The Canucks could have drafted Kempe instead of McCann with their second 1st-rounder in last year's draft. Both seem like great picks, but it would have been funny to see two Canucks 18 year-olds in the AHL postseason. Kempe has certainly been productive in his short stay. I think the Kings made a great pick.

Kemp is a guy who is a sure fire NHL player. He just does everything right. The only question is whether he's a 3rd liner, a 2nd liner or a guy who can even be the responsible role player on a top line guy. It's all going to be how his offense progresses, but being one of the youngest guys in the draft last year, I think he has a lot of untapped potential.

He was almost eligible for this draft year, so remakable he's doing well in the AHL at this age. I wasnt really impressed with him in the SEL this year. Would not surprised me he turned into another M. Parjaarvi. At least he is putting up some points now.

Kempe looks very good with the Monarchs. LA thought he would transfer well to the NA game and that looks smart so far. Great skater, looks like he's still learning positioning a bit (Kings system I mean, not getting caught in stupid places though), good nose for the net. Loves to hit, he's out there banging like it's his only job. Will be interesting to see what he does over a full NA season with Ontario next year, especially with some of the more creative playmakers from this team possibly gone (Weal/Shore moving up, O'Neill probably moving on?).

And a booming shot today...7 goals in these playoffs....:handclap:

Kempe's goal from tonight's Game 4 against Utica:
[nhl]829271[/nhl]

His first of two goals in Game 3:
[NHL]829094[/NHL]

Second goal in Game 3:
[NHL]829097[/NHL]

Goal against Wilkes-Barre:
[NHL]822560[/NHL]

He has adjusted very quickly to North American hockey. I don't think he'll be spending too much time in the AHL, maybe another season and he should be ready to make the jump after that, much like we've seen the Kings do with Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson.

AHL-champion after scoring his 8th goal of the playoffs.

Interesting tidbit, but he scored a goal in every series clinching game: Game 5 against Portland (3-2 series win), Game 5 against WBS (4-1 series win), Game 4 against Hartford (4-0 series win), Game 5 against Utica (4-1 series win)

I really wanted the Bruins to draft him... I'm pretty happy we ended up with Pastrnak, I guess, but Kempe still looks like a great player. Doing as well as he is in the AHL, especially at his age, is a good indication of success.

Pump your tires son. ;). He is nowhere even remotely close to the explosiveness or speed of Gabby. Nope nope. Yes does have quick speed and has a long powerful stride which is particularly impressive considering his size and strength. I had Kempe as a top 10 pick this year and I stand by that. Kempe is a great prospect with plenty of upside. Can't wait to see him in LA (can't believe he slipped to LA's pick).
The funny thing was that was the only reason I wrote him off my list... Just glad he went 20 spots lower than I predicted...:D

Seeing a 6'2 player skate like that, is a joy to watch.

Wasnt impressed with him in the SEL but has made some big strides. Looks very streaky. He scores in bunches.

Exactly, a 6'2 guy with skill and skating ability is like finding a diamond in the rough. I remember him more as a playmaker, but The Kings and Futa got a good player here at #30.

Just turned 19 and he's at a near point-per-game pace in the AHL. Good size and blazing speed. Great prospect.

It has more to do with him always being more suited for the small ice.

geeze I forgot about this guy... there was so much hype with him last couple years

ah well, still so young... whats his weaknesses???

He's one of those big, strong and fast players who might lack some IQ and creativity. Haven't seen him in a while but I'm sure he will reach the NHL eventually, perhaps never as a scorer though.

Was really high on him going into the draft and even after his draft +1. But starting to have serious doubts.

I really thought the Canucks would take a look at this guy, with him having played for MODO and the Canucks having a late pick that was instead used on Jared McCann. Not sure if I was right or wrong at this point but at least the Canucks turned McCann into something.

Kempe is about the same age as Virtanen and it looks like they are having similar struggles.

Kempe has always had consistency issues, it's what he will have to solve to make it as an NHL player. His raw skills are tremendous, but he needs to adjust his mental game. If he fixes that he will have no problem being an effective NHL'er. He looked fantastic in camp when given opportunities.
