I think he will get close to the same money as Hyman 7 yrs * 5.5
With Jake Muzzin likely retiring next yr it will give us some extra money to play with.
If we can sign him for 7 * 5 mil but sign him for 8 yrs to drop down cap hit.
8 yrs * 4.375 mil

The Leafs are in preliminary contract talks with Bunting.
I would think that this means that Muzzin is going to retire .
We couldn't afford to sign any other way.

I'm not sure if he's necessarily going to retire, even jf he's too injured to play hes still entitled to his remaining salary, and will likely want to collect it

The team can just keep him on LTIR (and offseason LTIR) to essentially free up the money.

The Leafs can exceed the cap by 10% in the offseason too. So if they want to ink Bunting it' shouldn't be a problem.

I also thing because of the Muzzin LTIR.
If Bunting wants to much they maybe looking to trade for a forward for this season and next.
I think they will only trade there first for a RFA or a young signed forward .
Example
Konecny
For
1st + Sandin + Robertson
Not to sure if that package would work.

I'm thinking it's now 100% a certainty that Bunting will be signed.
Hindsight is making it look like Hyman should have been retained, Dubas is too smart to make the same mistake twice.

I would hope 7 x 4.0 might get it done, although admittedly other than Giordano, we haven't seen any hometown discounts.

It will always depend upon any (or potentially all) of AAV, term and prospective clauses (NTC or NMC) in the contract. Re-signing Hyman sounds like a solid idea based on its own merit. Re-signing Hyman to a specific deal might also have resulted in alterations or deletions elsewhere on the roster that possibly wouldn't have been worth it for the team overall. Hopeful that talks with Bunting progress to the stage of exchanging numbers sooner rather than later.

At the time it didn't seem like a good idea, with hindsight it now seems like a mistake.

I don't know about that as Hyman seems to be stuck in certain roles with the Leafs. I am not saying he is a completely different players now but from the times I watch him play as an Oilers, he doesn't play the same way as he did with AM and company.

Just playing within a different system.
It just seems now with hindsight that the solution to the missing top 6 winger was here all along.

For 5.5M per? Not sure that fits in easily with the current cap situation.
He may have took a little less to stay.
They'd figure out the cap, they always do.

Thats the thing, Hyman playing in the Oilers system is what we missing in our Top6. But if Hyman resigns with the Leafs, will he be playing like now or will he just be the same old Hyman who played for us? Personally, I think the latter, as there is no way Keefe will instruct Hyman to play another style when it was working.

I know one doesn't necessarily depend on the other, but I'd almost want Kampf re-signed first. Just because it sort of seems like low hanging fruit. Just get it out of the way and work your way up to the bigger ones. Having Kampf in the bag for a while would be really nice.

I didn't see a big issue with the way the old Hyman played.

I don't think they ever thought he was not the answer. The problem was always the cap hit. Without deleting others from the roster, we could not afford to keep him, regardless of how well he fit out need.

Hyman is better than Bunting imo, considerably in fact. So if Hyman was 5.5, Bunting is 3.5 max for me. They play a similar game, but Hyman was way stronger and more suited to that type of game. Bunting gets an A for effort without a doubt, and brings other benefits perhaps that Hyman did not. But on the ice, in a one on one, I am taking Hyman 100% of the time.

If they don’t sign him by TDL. , would leafs use him as their own rental, or move him for assets.

3.5 x 4 or 5 years.

Believe it was more the length of the contract than the dollars. I imagine giving him the extra year he would have signed for less than the 5.5 he signed for in Siberia.
Obviously they would have had to make other decisions which would have impacted the current roster.
In hindsight it may have been better to explore those other options.
