What's funny? I don't know what your trying to say here, We don't miss Hyman enjoy him hope he continues to do well for you guys,
and was it him having a dynamite playoffs or was it McDavid inflating his numbers?
it was actually Hyman driving play constantly himself to be honest. he was their third best forward against calgary and show up against the avs too. he had an incredible playoff and earned every inch of it

If there's one thing about Albertans in Canada, it's that they care more about what Torontonians than they care about themselves. This is a province that elected a Torontonian to be premier just because he put on a cowboy hat and said that he hated Ontario.

“Everyone is really excited to see what this team can bring next year,” Bunting said in an interview with the Toronto Sun on Friday. “I can’t wait for this season to start. I want to get it going, even though we have quite some time to go until training camp.”

For Bunting, embarking on his second season with the Leafs will be about taking another step from what he accomplished in 2021-22 after signing a two-year contract with the club in free agency last July.

Bunting didn’t win the Calder Trophy this week when the National Hockey League announced award winners on Tuesday night in Tampa, finishing third in voting, but that won’t diminish what he achieved in 79 games with his hometown team.

A total of 63 points (23 goals and 40 assists) was enough for Bunting to lead all NHL rookies in scoring, though his age — Bunting turns 27 in September — and a stellar season by Detroit Red Wings defenceman Moritz Seider were factors in Calder voting.

Nevertheless, Bunting fit in well with Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner after earning the opportunity to play on the Leafs’ top line, and though the start of camp remains months away, has an idea of his goal once it starts.

“I have to show that this year was not a fluke,” Bunting said. “I have to be consistent because that’s what good hockey players do. They do it every single year. So definitely, I have to take my game up a level."

“I can’t be comfortable with what I did. I was fortunate that I landed on a spot with Matty and Mitch, and we gelled and we rolled all year together."

“I was proud of myself, the way I handled everything. It was quite the path to get to the NHL. I stuck to my game and believed in myself and I had a pretty successful year by doing all of that.”

Bunting took a couple of weeks off after the Leafs were eliminated on May 14 in Game 7 of the opening round by the Tampa Bay Lightning, using some downtime to recover fully from a late-season injury that kept him out of Game 1 of the series.

...................

Bunting has been in the gym for a few weeks and plans to return to the ice in July to prepare fully for what will be a crucial season for him. He is heading for unrestricted free agency next summer and will be in line for a significant raise after finishing a contract that carries an annual average value of $950,000 US.

“I’m going to try to keep that out of my mind as much as I can,” Bunting said. “I don’t want to let that interfere, because if that does come into my mind, it will throw me off playing my game. I just want to focus on winning and helping this team win.”

Give him the Hyman deal. Both had roughly the same amount of games. 2.5 x 4.

Hope he can be a 60 point forward and if not, at least 40 point with bite and he's a good player who can play depth or top 6.

Hyman never did anything close to what Bunting did in Toronto

Matthews and Marner also didnt do anything close to what they did when Hyman was here. Bunting is a nice player but is he truly.that good or is he the product of playing with 2 x 100 point forwards.

The pitch to Bunting is you get to play with Matthews and Marner. It is unlikley he leaves and gets to go to McDavid like Hyman did. Sometimes the grass is not greener.

I think term is most important for him. I could see him taking a 3.75 x 6 or 7 year deal if he puts up another 60 point season.

if he has another similar season he'll price himself off our team so i'll start craping on him early to beat the rush

The Leafs could try to offer him an extension this summer that takes some risk on their part namely that Bunting might not be a long term healthy .8 ppg player. Bunting gets security at the cost of a maximum payout he could score in the summer of 2023 with another strong season in 2022-23. 4 years at $3.5M (Kerfoot money) with full NMC?

Problem with that approach is you're repeating the Andreas Johnsson negotiating tactic rewarding a guy with a small sample by locking them into a deal.

Yep. With every gamble, there's always the possibility for a loss.

Overall I'm not too worried about the Bunting situation. He clearly has a good relationship with Dubas' and Keefe (what brought him to the Leafs to begin with). If the front office wants to keep him, they'll find room on a compromise

I'm betting there are quite a few unproven NHL players who'd love to line up with Matthews and marner.

I'm sure they would but as well have seen not all of them 100% fit

If it was that easy both Jimbo Joe and Ritchie would have stacked points

We almost need to see what cheap player has the best puck retrieval stats and sign him

Yeah, they have to bring certain attributes, but they don't have to be top 6 forwards on their own merit.

I completely agree. I would have loved to see how knies looked on that line.

I think bunting would work on the second and obviously would drive his value down a little.

Still don't get what went on there
