His ability to throw those hits shows that he can read the play, better than any other oiler D man besides Ekholm.
I loved his pinches today. If the Oilers can get back to the cohesive 5 man defensive unit they've shown for large parts this season and through the playoffs last year then that is going to be a very useful attribute in stifling teams breakout and transition game.

Lord don't get me started on the love affair this forum has had with Kulak this year lol. Also bleeding goals against this year.

At a certain point someone consistently under or overperforming underlying numbers stops being luck and starts being that the underlying numbers clearly aren't able to quantify everything
Kulak's on ice results have been historically good though. Goaltending, however, has not performed as poorly in the past as they have done this season. Lets hope it turns around as its a large driving force for some of these poor on-ice results you speak of.

Kulak also historically has had a better partner than Emberson though ;)

I actually miss the Kulak-Desharnais bottom pair. It's too bad Vinny is too slow to handle the playoffs.

You probably think Ceci is better than Kulak, so that kinda shows it all.

The only thing Desharnais was good at was crosschecking people around the net.

They're both #5 d-men who don't really belong in a top 4. I don't think either are good enough to be in your top 4 and are both overpaid as bottom pair d-men on a roster as top heavy as ours.

Like I said book is still out on Emberson. 91 NHL games played and not even 25 yet. He's had some good stretches and some bad ones. Too early to judge the player imo.

Fair enough. I just personally wouldn't have him in my top 6 starting D right now when all is healthy. He's a young guy 100%. Hopefully he continues to develop.

Ott was FAR worse. Stars win this game without Ott being a dunce on several plays. Not too impressed with this game overall or Skinner "playing the puck" behind his net with 2mins left.

Skinner is what he is, a complete dope. Take the W.
Hey a game where are goalie was better than theirs! It takes quite the effort from the opposition but it can happen.

Not sure what that third was, 4th goal was flukey and the Refs were trash

The PK needs to be fixed, its a disaster and most of the blame goes to the coaching staff for that

Hopefully Jones stays in the lineup

Wondering if we even see Jeff Skinner again
Brown and Janmark were useless and less than dangerous. Podkolzin is not a second line player. Skinner should be playing

So uh the problem with that is that's the system they're attempting to run. Same as last year.

I think it's called a Diamond+1 or Triangle+1 PK. 3 guys down low, 2 defencemen at the posts, F1 in the slot. That's supposed to prevent cross-seam passes. The F2 at the top plays a bit higher than F1 and attempts to keep the puck on one-side of the ice by forcing the D to pick a side. Then he slides down to block the seam giving the D with the puck the only option of either going lower down into the zone or passing to his D partner which resets the PK.

Ex:

The problem is they've been absolute trash at executing it this year.

What happened after this screengrab is the guy for Dallas in the right corner (Duchene) gets the puck from the D. He button hooks and Brown doesn't respond quickly enough to slide lower, as a result the seam opens up and Rantanen scores.
The oilers are 1st in xGA and 27th in actual goals against. The problem is that guy wearing 74

As often as people want to say it, it's just not true. Ceci was a #5 d-man who got miscast here as a #4 guy and was relied upon to play 20 minutes a game. He still was putting up much better results than Emberson is here.
What people say is actually very true. He was analytically the worst defencemen in the league last year with an xGAR of 2%. He tanked every pair he played with. This year- he continues to be the worst d man in the league. Even in his best seasons in Pittsburgh, he was barely above a replacement level player. He isn’t a number 5. He is a number 8 and should be in the AHL

Don't want a close game like that but honestly...what goal was an absolute bad one from Skinner??

That Benn shot was top notch from behind a screen. Another off a dman. Rants in the slot.....again

Yup, I'm not much of a Skinner fan but he was good tonight. PK sucks and the other GA were shit defensive plays, for the most part.

Complaining about Skinner tonight is insane. One complete fluke and three goals he had no shot on. He literally did the thing everyone says he can’t do, which is make the big, athletic save on a sure goal.

Can still think he sucks, and acknowledge he did his job tonight.

Walman looked awesome, looking forward to watching him hopefully for a few years. Seems like an exciting player.

Yup, that's me. He did his job tonight...and still sucks. I'm looking forward to a goaltending change in the off-season (even if he remains with the team), but am hoping he can do his best as he's who they've got until then.
