I am trusting Francis' own words here, and basing it off of interviews. Francis stated after the draft that he was not approached by anyone to not select any players. He also made the statement multiple times that he was looking for picks and not cap.You say this like it's some sort of fact. Seattle made ZERO trades pre-draft.
Either he was asking WAY too much for the deals you're suggesting........or he wasn't interested.
He said the only deals anyone brought to him was to take on massive contracts and that the offered return was not acceptable. Poile and Fletcher (two that came out in the media) said that Francis was asking for a 1st round pick and they balked.
Francis literally took a "pass" when he selected Quennville and Bayreuther because he would rather have the cap space than the contract from anyone available.
He facilitated a deal with Calgary to pass through Pitlick, and he took 11 D, traded one, lost one to waviers, waived one, and was forced to carry 8 D the entire season because he knew he would lose them if he waived another.
Borgen only played a handfull of games before the TDL. He was not part of the big picture at the expansion draft, he would have been protectable. And yes, I am definitely speculating on the cost, but Francis was trying to add picks. He commented on that being his plan. He moved MacDermid for a 4th. There was an opportunity there.
