You don't even have to watch the game. Just looking at raw Corsi without QoC, QoT, shot quality or OZS correction:

Rasmus Ristolainen isn't even Sabres best D-man. Just as Red Wings Teemu Pulkkinen is the greatest Selke level player to ever lace them up and carries his line mates possession stats, even Datsyuk's, to new heights when on ice together.

What the actual ****. Are you trolling?

Same contract as Jones.

Great deal for the Sabres organization, Ristolainen taking the Seth Jones deal.
While its the same money as Jones, he actually got a better deal. Since Risto didn't play past 40 games in his rookie year he didn't earn a year towards UFA, whereas Jones did. So, Columbus bought two years of UFA from Jones, whereas Sabres only bought one year from Risto.

Advanced stats people hate him.

Eye testers love him.

I wonder who will eventually be right

Those who reflect the stats to context (quality of team mates, offensive zone starts and time, quality of shots, quality of competition etc., all of the data that is collected) love Ristolainen.

Stats can be deceiving if you only take a look at a small portion of available data.

Easy availability of HERO charts and raw Corsi columns have made people think of themselves as "advanced stats people". Which is one of the reasons that Teemu Pulkkinen can be thought of as a complete first line Selke level winger according to some of these "Corsi for advanced stats people".

Happy for Ristolainen - mean stud with clear #1D potential. I suppose for Sabres too, but less due to things.

Little of column A little of column B. I like Risto a lot and he's a guy that I'd say will keep improving as he learns the league, player tendencies, and the finer points of the position. I like the contract.

This is precisely the problem. People use advanced stats in isolation, which is virtually useless.

Gotta say, after seeing all these deals for MacKinnon, Monahan, Gaudreau, Ristolainen, Barrie... it's nice to see the dollar figures start to come back down to earth.

Bobby Ryan is making more than all of these players, think about that.

Very happy to have Risto for 6 more years. But I hate that Buffalo only bought 1 year of UFA. I guess it's kinda worth it though, to get him for $5.4M per year. Maybe they just couldn't agree on the AAV of a longer (or shorter) deal, with more precedent for the 6 year deals than there is for 8yrs.

I think that this deal will look like a total steal in the next couple of years. t least that's the hope anyway...

UFA vs rfas. Leverage vs basically no leverage. I get your point but almosr all ufas are overpaid
