So Rielly's and Jones's contracts continue to set the standard. How shocking and unexpected. :)

Still a good deal for both sides.

2.

He played a 3 year ELC and has 4 rfa years. They bought 6

They only bought one UFA year. He burned the first year of his ELC by playing more than 9 games (34), but he did not accrue a season by being on the roster for 40 games.

Lindholm is worth a bit more IMO

Trouba is right in the Risto wheelhouse IMO...he just wants out of Winnipeg

I agree, but if anyone was gonna get the low end, I would think Troba(I know I'm in the minority) would do 5.4 for him, 5.7 for Risto, and 6 for Hampus.

Laughable contract. Ristolainen is nowhere near as good as Seth Jones.

There's not much basis for proclaiming that. Even if it were true, they're two different players on different teams that signed their deals at different times, something that seems consistently lost on people when comparing contracts.

Committing that much term and money to a defenseman who has been atrocious at defense so far in his NHL career is laughable, or at least a massive risk. Ristolainen would have been a perfect candidate for a bridge deal for the Sabres to see what he actually is. Instead they're stuck with him long term regardless of whether he ever figures out how to not bleed shots against or to score at even strength.

Same contract as Jones.

Not quite. Jones' deal buys 2 UFA years because he accrued 3 seasons during his ELC. Risto only accrued 2, so we're only getting 1 UFA year.

Honestly, exactly the kind of deal I was hoping we'd avoid signing him to. Wanted: (1) 7-8yrs (2-3yrs UFA); (2) bridge (no UFA years but another crack at buying more later); and (3) 5-6yrs (0-1yr UFA) -- in that order.

At least he's signed, though, and won't miss any games.

Ok that makes more sense, and you may be right. The Sabres are trying to build a better defense, and that will help him grow. I guess we'll have to wait 3 years to see if a bridge was worth it. RFA's are getting more and more unpredictable.

he's the second best defenseman in the league. He's worth even more. The only person who would even mention subban and risto in the same sentence would be an incredibly delusional sabres fan.

Ristolainen has simply not been atrocious at defense. Another case of using analytic statistics without actually being analytical.

Ristolainen had a worse 5v5 P/60 last year than Roman Polak, Patrik Nemeth, Michal Rozsival, etc. Try again please.

And another. As if those players are in remotely comparable situations.

Ristolainen is ahead of trouba IMO. Trouba hasn't really shown he's worth a 6 year or 5+ million year
