Holden Caulfield and I had the choice to attend a game for free between last night's game and Sunday's game against the Preds. We choose very very wrong.

Niku looked much more comfortable last night. He is starting to show off that skill in all 3 zones finally. It's nice to finally have a 3rd NHL calibre defenseman on the roster for the first time this year.

We have had great luck. Injuries are normal every year. We are very fortunate none of our top guys get injured. This is what drives me nuts about Maurice, if Dahl... is gone for awhile he will add him to our injury woahs when he's usually a healthy scratch

our top 7 I think most of us will agree on are

Helly
Morrisey
55
Connor
Laine
Wheeler
Ehlers

So we have had a very good year injury wise. Our depth has been hit but look at what Colorado and Pitt went through we are not even close. Maurice will bring up man games lost which makes a Bittetto injury the same as Rantenen for Colorado

One could argue Buff is out with injury related reasons. It’s more complicated than that, but still.

Laine and Morrissey lost some games. Morrissey might have been playing with some ailment.

Little would be the 8th player - one who is arguably more important than Ehlers/Laine/Connor given our lack of center depth. He’s our 2C afterall.

It may have been score effects in the 3rd period but Jets were being outshot and outchanced even when they scored the first goal. IIRC the goal came on Jets 7th shot. Van had 13 by then. You could say that Jets were going for quality over quantity. The goals were all nice goals. So was the one that didn't count. But Jets also had both excellent goaltending and a lot of luck around our net.

Not saying Jets stole the game because I think we were full value for our goals. But the D zone was still an awful mess.

The first Jets goal came 1:22 into the game, so 13-7 shots at that point would've been a crazy start!

Up 3-0 a minute into the second, Harkins plays a total of 6:10.

Who the hell really cares. Jets are bloody desperate for a win, we're winless in 6 at home and fighting for a playoff spot. Canucks were pushing hard for the back half of the game. Just get the f'n win. I like Harkins but his treatment is not high on my list right now.

I wish people would stop whining about their pet player's ice-time every. Single. Game.

He's not a pet player of mine, in fact prior to this year I said he's not even good enough to be playing in the AHL. Doesn't change the fact that playing your 4th line 6 minutes a game is a poor recipe to win games.

I'd put Pionk as our top 7. We can survive without alot of those guys better than we can survive without him. Also, Copp is a very important part of our time. Ratenen may score goals but we couldn't stop goals without Copp or lowry.

OK, 2nd goal then. Memory is tricky when there were 2 disallowed goals mixed in there. Point is the same. The 'Nucks had at least some edge in the play even early on. The shot clock alone is a little misleading because they each had the same number of shot attempts after the first period. But Van was getting shots on net and getting very dangerous opportunities.

I'm sure getting up 3-0 had some effect, but it doesn't completely explain the play in our D zone.

Depends how much you play 3rd I would say. If your top 3 lines are getting 20-18-16 mins then playing 4th for 6 seems fine. If they get 24-17-11 them there’s more of an issue.

4th liners who don’t PK don’t get that many minutes usually. Appleton had almost 10 mins. Scheifele led forwards with 21.15. Copp was actually second with 20.46. Shore had 7.41. Judging 4th line based on ice time of single player does not necessarily tell much.

You’re right about PK part but I didn’t notice them out there at all 5vs5 in the third period. And none of the other lines could get out of our zone. Just thought it was strange at the time I was watching.

That would be a great choice. He’s older and should be physically ready. Decent defensively too. Or will it be Logan ;)

I agree that Kovacevic would be a great choice, or Logan a logical optional choice.....so obviously that means Schilling is being told to move his stuff from the moose room to the jets room.....

And a poor recipe in developing our young players... a young player that has more edge, more skill, more hops, more hockey IQ than Bourque for one...

Yet gets "sheltered"....

I know another word that begins with "sh"... combine with "on"....

And that is what Po'Mo' is doing to Harkins...

Harkins isn't going to lose confidence.... because I don't believe he will have a bad game and can be elevated up the lineup as he is a balanced player...

He's been through a lot and never quit... Po'Mo' shouldn't over think it...

Let Harkins hang himself... more likely he will just evolve...

Harkins is no favorite of mine, but the small sample sizes have frustrated the hell out of me because I see really great things in that pathetic amount of ice time given...

I'm with you on deployment Ky'...

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a number of years now...

Po'Mo's deployment choices led to most of the problems in the 2nd half of last season and certainly helped create the "rift" as well...

In mid-November last year I stated on this board even though we were winning the over deployment of Po'Mo's Pets was unsustainable... I wasn't wrong...

Not a mirage...

That's Ky's and my PET...

Except the NHL isn't a development league. That is why teams have AHL affiliates. On the Moose a prospect can get 20 minutes a night with optimal usage. In the NHL the same prospect gets slotted into a role they can handle. Rosie is quite a bit ahead of Harkins in all areas and he still struggles pushed too far up the lineup. Harkins should be in above Bourque, but the 4th is where he slots in.

Sometimes it just turns out that way because of matchups, game flow, or penalties. Deal with it. Every coach in the league, Maurice included, would like their 4th line to be able to chip in 10+ minutes a game but it just doesn't turn out that way.

I don't feel the need to indict the coach after a 4-0 win because our line of AHL callups didn't get 10 minutes.

Niku does NOT lack size. 6'1, 194 since last year already.
________________________________________________

Good to know he's 6'1 --but I think they overlist his weight, like with many players. I'd be surprised if he weighed more than 175 lbs-tops. He could put on 10-15 lbs of muscle in my opinion.

And at least he isn't as vocal as Niku about it.

Yes 'Bogo the AHL is the development part of it...

But what if you suspect more is there and want to see it...

Not that guys like Ky' and I are somehow gifted with sight...

But its hard to see anything with 6 minutes of ice time...

And Po'Mo's deployment choices in the past have been difficult to witness...

I doubt 6 more minutes in a number of games of Harkins will be horrifying...

I suggest quite the opposite... that's all..

PS... I don't think Rosie is ahead of Harkins at all... but has demonstrated inconsistency... I don't think Harkins will show that...

Certainly Roslo' has more raw skill... but tool box for that set of tools... ?

I suspect Harkins has a Toolbox and the tools will be revealed if given some time...

That is what I want to see and suspect...

I actually agree that Harkins will eventually move up the roster and have been mostly impressed by what he has shown to date. Maybe I’m more patient waiting for him to get there? Limited ice time on the 4th line is a pretty common 1st step for most players lacking the high end draft pedigree.
