Bryan Marchment passes away

Damn. Way too young to go. Absolutely hated him as a player but it's very sad to see someone die so young. One of the dirtiest players of all time, but also undeniably a warrior and a character guy. My most notable memory of him was his bloody slugfest with Craig Rivet.

RIP and really wondering about cause of death, it seems so random and sudden.

The only thing CTE that would make an untimely death more likely is it leads to serious depression or drug addiction. Hopefully, these aren't the case here.

That's probably not completely true. CTE/TBI cause marked increases in circulatory disease, seizure, pneumonia etc. For example Probert died of a heart attack.

Depression/drugs/suicide are better known because of some high profile events with former athletes.

Marchment lived life in the fast lane. While he was never going to be a man aging into his 80s, this is still too soon and disappointing to hear.

Regardless of what people thought about him, he was ultra-competitive, teammates loved him, and just lived for the game of hockey.

Thoughts and prayers with his family.

He didn't hold back. And was there to bring pain not seriously injure someone. A guy you want on your team and hate to play against. Mike Grier and tm have talked great about him. But let's bring up Brashear who has his own track record and the fact the guy like to lay big hits.
no thanks.........just like no one wanted matt cooke or raffi torres on their home town team

Not everyone deserves nice send off. Not talking about this case but in general.
Yeah, and not everyone needs to bring up his well-known history of questionable hits, but here you are.

He tore some knees and changed the trajectory of some careers for sure, but it’s not like he was purposely hitting heads with elbow pads trying to knock guys out, like Scott Stevens, who doesn’t have nearly the same reputation, nor did he ever own up to his play like Marchment would.

Glad we can always count on people like you to point out the obvious. I’m sure all the stories from people that knew him outside of the 60 minute game are just completely full of shit and don’t know him the way you do.

Yeah, and there's a time and a place to discuss their playing career and your critique thereof.

A thread discussing their recent, unexpected, and far too early passing probably isn't either of those.
Read it again.

In general. Nothing about him. I wasn't talking about him. I was talking the evil people in this world who don't deserve the peace.

For example:

I would not say RIP for Hitler. You get my point? Not everybody deserves it.

Dude you have wild imagination. I didn't say one bad word about Marchment or his hits.

RIP

I just think the tact of the statement was off putting. I think using Hitler as a comparison doesn't really help the optics either. I know you're not ACTUALLY comparing him to Hitler, obviously, however the use of such of an extreme example doesn't help you argument.

It was probably made in a manner you might take it as an offense. Sorry for that. It was not the purpose.

All I was saying that evil people of the world don't deserve RIP.

I know he was hated in 1998 for his hit on Nieuwendyk in the playoffs as well as the collision with Modano in December of 1997. But what are people's thoughts on the Nieuwendyk hit? Over the years I've watched it and I'm not so sure he deliberately rammed his knee into the boards so much as just got Nieuwendyk out of the play with finishing his check.

Seemed more implied the first time I read it. That response could go to a lot of other replies here but not yours.

Nothing wrong with that hit.

RIP.

That’s what physical defenseman did back in that day. It was an unfortunate result, but people only got mad because of his reputation.

It was fun watching him switch to his left and tune up Derain Hatcher after he kept going after him.

This is rough.

When I first started scouting and was really sheepish about chatting with other guys, especially around pro scouts, he was the easiest guy in the world to talk to.

Never talked down to me, always listened to what I had to say, and gave me tips and things to look for. First guy to ever make me feel like an equal, when even OHL and junior guys at the minor midget level would look down their noses.

Super sad day, and way too soon. Sincerest condolences to his friends and family.

Rest In Power, Mush.

GD it, Mike Grier.

I'm literally crying right now.

When I started to watch hockey he was the embodiment of the dirty player, he was VICIOUS and would go out for knees and stuff but being a tough SOB in a tough league, he never had any problem to back up his plays with a fight. He was a damn solid defensman too, but he decided he'd be remembered only for his cheapshots.
Rest in Peace Bryan.
