I really like this deal for the Bruins for a bunch of reasons......
The Bruins are getting a D-man in Orlov that is just a solid all-around player. He's built a little bit like Bourque, short and thick. He's not going to put up massive numbers but he's not afraid of the puck either. When Washington won the cup in 2018 they rode their Top 3 D-men (Carlson, Orlov, Niskanen) very hard, all 3 playing 24-25 minutes a night. Their bottom six were in that 12-17 min. range. It's not 2018 anymore but Orlov isn't going to be asked to play 25 mins. here and he's not old by any means. And getting this done a bit early gives him almost 2 months to get adjusted.
Also means they aren't getting Gavrikov, who is a good player but he doesn't have Orlov's playoff pedigree and I think Orlov is the better all-around player. If either is/was to be a UFA rental than I'd rather spend assets like 1st rounders on guys in Orlov's level. Gavrikov to me is comparable to Carlo in that on really good teams both are solid No.4s because of their limitations offensively. Orlov to me is the 3rd best D-man on the Bruins, slots everyone else perfectly. Also means they are out on Chychrun most likely, but they retained assets like Lysell and Lohrei.
We've complained for years that the Bruins were always the nail and not the hammer, and the Bruins never had a hammer. Well Garnet Hathaway is a hammer. And he's an NHL caliber skater. That's what he brings to the table. Everything else is secondary. Once he lays out a few opponents in the Garden fans will take to him.
I still hope they aren't done and can find a way to add a "Marcus Johansson 2019" type of addition. Maybe Nyquist if they spent that much time talking to Columbus, stash him on LTIR until the playoffs Tampa Bay-style. I still think one more legit scoring winger wouldn't go astray in this line-up. Adding a scoring wing would allow them to push Frederic down and he can center Line 4 with Foligno and Hathaway in case Nosek can't go.
