If we’re paying a premium to move cap why not the one with term left of it going to a team with all expiring d contracts.

Well 2 reasons

1) It is more expensive to move a players with term next year than one who doesn't . Smith costs Washington about one million in real money. Reilly would cost Washington about 4.6 million in real money (yes could be reduced by buyout down to 3 mil or so)

2) Smith save the Bruins 3.1 million in cap space, Reilly would only save 1.85 million. So wouldn't be enough space to make deal

Is Orlov a rental? I'd prefer the 1st to have been used for a non-rental is the only minor hesitation.

Sweeney wins another deadline regardless.

3rd line RW with size is the last possible addition.

This team has no cap space for next year. Bringing in someone with term would have committed to moving good players off the roster before next year.

honestly the biggest reason I didn't want the Gavrikov deal was the talk of a 5-6 year deal at 5+ million ,

And if Orlov and the Bruins decide they love each other, they can consider resigning him

I don’t want Cliffy going anywhere, I can live with some of his lapses. Every defensemen has them. I like his grit and his toughness
You’re going to see when Gryz gets manhandled and or injured. they have Clifton and now Orlov and the luxury of dressing 7 d if needed. I would have been pissed if they traded Clifton they need his physical presence in the playoffs. Also Idont get the I hate on Hathewayblah blah I’ll never like him. he’s a Bruin now and is going on a line that is going to be a pain to play against. Give the guy a chance he hits a ton how many Bruins do that.

It won't go down! My poor pants!
Is he tough?..or just dirty....
@BlackFrancis :laugh:

I’d say both. He has a pretty decent fight card, and can chuck em’.

I really dislike his personality more than anything. The flexing in the box after fights, etc. He comes across as being cocky and a bit of a yappy smart ass, but…

The Bruins have been missing a little of that element for a little bit now. So as much as i dislike him, I’m willing to suspend my beliefs momentarily to see what he brings to this team.

I really like this deal for the Bruins for a bunch of reasons......

The Bruins are getting a D-man in Orlov that is just a solid all-around player. He's built a little bit like Bourque, short and thick. He's not going to put up massive numbers but he's not afraid of the puck either. When Washington won the cup in 2018 they rode their Top 3 D-men (Carlson, Orlov, Niskanen) very hard, all 3 playing 24-25 minutes a night. Their bottom six were in that 12-17 min. range. It's not 2018 anymore but Orlov isn't going to be asked to play 25 mins. here and he's not old by any means. And getting this done a bit early gives him almost 2 months to get adjusted.

Also means they aren't getting Gavrikov, who is a good player but he doesn't have Orlov's playoff pedigree and I think Orlov is the better all-around player. If either is/was to be a UFA rental than I'd rather spend assets like 1st rounders on guys in Orlov's level. Gavrikov to me is comparable to Carlo in that on really good teams both are solid No.4s because of their limitations offensively. Orlov to me is the 3rd best D-man on the Bruins, slots everyone else perfectly. Also means they are out on Chychrun most likely, but they retained assets like Lysell and Lohrei.

We've complained for years that the Bruins were always the nail and not the hammer, and the Bruins never had a hammer. Well Garnet Hathaway is a hammer. And he's an NHL caliber skater. That's what he brings to the table. Everything else is secondary. Once he lays out a few opponents in the Garden fans will take to him.

I still hope they aren't done and can find a way to add a "Marcus Johansson 2019" type of addition. Maybe Nyquist if they spent that much time talking to Columbus, stash him on LTIR until the playoffs Tampa Bay-style. I still think one more legit scoring winger wouldn't go astray in this line-up. Adding a scoring wing would allow them to push Frederic down and he can center Line 4 with Foligno and Hathaway in case Nosek can't go.

This team doesn’t need a HUGE move. Just small tweaks. I think this is the way to go. The teams chemistry is on fire. Cant f*** with it too much.
This one is more than a small tweak. Adding Orlov puts it in the Huge Move category. He's arguably our 3rd or 4th best defenseman.......and he didn't go to another team like Tampa or Toronto.
