Not that this doesn't have a very good chance of being true, but has there been any conformation of this at all?

When reached for comment the team did not confirm nor did they deny the report. In all likelihood, it happened.

Similar to what transpired with Blake during his contract talks and the team presented him with a threat that he'd be traded if he didn't accept their offer, and in response, Blake wanted to strip himself of the captaincy. This was all initially reported first by Bob McKenzie back in 2000 before anyone else, and I think a day or so later the team issued a press release addressing the stalemate in contract discussions.

Don't know if the team will issue a statement on this matter but I'm guessing they'd like to keep this matter as quietly as possible. Seems like we can't go through any summer without any drama taking place since 2014.

Why would you want Backes anywhere near the Kings? He's Dustin Brown minus the mental fortitude and Stanley Cups.

Didn't Backes/Brown play really well together in the Olympics? Now to find a way to fit their combined 12M on the 3rd line so they can be reunited and hopefully spark Brown's game.

Backes on the third line would be insane. But I wouldn't give him more than a 4-5 year deal at $5 million. He's not going to take that so move on from him.

Sounds like Brown is pretty pissed off. Friedman said that too (unless he was just quoting mayor).

I wouldn't be surprised if Brown demanded a trade which is going to make Dean and the Kings look even worse.

How is it going to make the Kings look worse and isn't this what most of you all want since he signed the contract,TRADE him and forbert,or kempe, merch etcor at least a pick but please someone take him , well your on your way to getting your wish , he will probably be given this year to get back to a 40-50 point guy but if not he can now be exposed at the exp draft without the embaresment of exposing your captain "........and like someone else said he is all class and I doubt he publicly asks for a trade

And why wouldn't it?

Maybe cause Brown wasn't going to lead a Kings team to a cup with Terry Murray behind the bench?

Drama

Regardless of who is more important, we're stuck with Brown for a long time. We're not stuck with Sutter. I think the obvious decision is to do whatever you can to rehabilitate your albatross contract.

And "two Cups bro" is a bad argument because it's flippant and close minded. God forbid you entertain a dissenting opinion. What's it like in that echo chamber?

I'm not saying stripping the C is the wrong call, period. I'm saying it's the wrong call IF this was a Sutter driven agenda. If things are Sutter v. Brown in this regard, you choose Brown. You're stuck with that cap hit forever. You make it ****ing work and figure out the coach later. No one is winning a championship with 5.7 million in phantom cap space.

If Brown won't get picked up by the expansion team (which is probable) the best option is to buy him out. We either have to choose a $2 million dead cap hit with buy out for 6 years or $6 million for 6 years. No team will trade for Brown until 2020 because of his term.

Since it'll be tough to re-create, or re-invent, the time between 2012 and 2014 for this team, no matter who they bring in, the best option might be just to live with Brown's contract until it's done. If he's not productive, and the cap hit keeps Lombardi from adding needed players, they would get a higher draft pick. Now that they have their draft picks, that can help for the future. Unless Lombardi takes Hickey or Forbort again. So, in theory it helps.

Haven't had a chance to read through the whole thread yet, but do you think Quick is in the conversation for the "C"?

I'd go with Mersch on the first line. That is clearly a King fan who is watching a totally different game and regime than I am.

Not sold on Mersch. Poorest skater in the organization and had only 2 goals in 52 shots in the playoffs. 3.8% scoring percentage. Not much of a playmaker either. Hate Lucic? He can make plays, creates chances and can score. He's not the only one who didn't have a great playoff showing. Ask (soon to be captain?) Kopi if he'd rather have Mersch or Lucic.

Think the best solution is to trade King for a #2 and use the supposed little extra money needed to sign Lucic. (but as stated, may be the term length, rather than dollars. Either way, would trade King for a pick or decent prospect. He's never elevated his game since 2012)

Re: Brown. Such a shame. Don't know how he regressed so much from 2012.

I think this is the first domino in that scenario playing out.

I highly doubt he gets selected in an expansion draft. My hope is the Vegas team will have interest in Gaborik. We'd then buyout Brown and we'd be free of two crippling contracts.

The franchise couldn't have taken more missteps than it did post 2014 Cup win. Just incredible how everything blew up in Lombardi's face. 7 years to Gaborik. 4 years to Greene. 8 years to Brown.

If Voynov and Richards never lose their minds, these contract concerns aren't as big of a deal.

If we had 2012 Richards and any version of Voynov, we go on a deep run in 2015, maybe this year, too.

This team was still a juggernaut in 2014 regardless of contract situations. And Gaborik will be semi-productive to productive throughout his deal. This year was an anomaly.
