Brind'Amour throws Tlusty under the bus for the Rantanen situation: "And the question is, should we have known that before we attempted to sign him?"

Carolina’s final offer to Rantanen was apparently $14 x 8. Money wasn’t the issue in this situation.

Who are you arguing against? Neither Rod nor I refuted that.

He's upset because the only guy they offered enough money to is the guy that didn't want to stay, and they should have known he didn't want to stay to begin with.

I think what Carolina couldn’t have factored in was how much or a bitch Rants was/is and that he wouldn’t have showed up to play, was willing to mail it in. Dude was straight up coasting the games I watched - Habs game he was atrocious.

I suspect they may have kept him for a playoff rub but he forced their hand by no showing post trade.

Yeah, it would have been a much more difficult decision for the Canes if he put up a PPG and still claimed he wouldn’t re-sign. Then they would have actually had to make a tough decision whether to keep him or not for the playoff run. But with how he was playing? Easiest decision to move him.

Again, catch up on the situation before making any statements. During negotiations, the Avalanche asked Rantanen/his agent if he would be willing to sign a new deal in Carolina. Rantanen/his agent believed this to be a negotiation tactic and told them “Yes, we’ll sign in Carolina if traded there.” The Avalanche passed this info to Carolina. And the trade is made.

How, exactly, was Carolina supposed to know “he didn’t want to stay to begin with” when he literally says otherwise?

Sign and trade.

Okay, so that may be the case. But what if Tulsky thought to himself, "Screw it...we're going all in for a Cup this year, and the chance we'll get to trade for a Rantanen-type as a rental may not come around again or for a long time."

The only downside to that would be having a sulking Rantanen who dogs it out there. But that would only be on him, and a testament of him for other teams to see heading into free agency.

Tulsky took a risk...a very very very good one because I'd say everyone was thinking that: a) they were shocked that Rantanen was traded/acquired; and b) the Hurricanes won the deal. It went sideways, fast, he recalibrated, and came out of it just fine. GMs like that who make a mistake and rectify it earn more of my respect.

For me the situation is kinda like “do I want to go to Fred’s house three Saturday's from now?” Someone asks me that I go “yea maybe, I gotta see what I got going on but il probably let you know” Feigning interest not to be rude but I have no intention of going to Fred’s house. Fred’s house is weird, kinda small and smells like old malted 40 bottles and skittles (cause of the candles).

When the time comes to confirm whether I will be going to Fred’s, I got say “Nah man not really, I can think of at least 4 other places I’d rather be.”

It’s kinda like that. Now if Fred bought extra boneless chicken wings and that wine he knows I like to drink, that’s on him. I never confirmed my attendance.
Just got word from an undisclosed source who spoke to Fred. His spirit is shattered I'm hearing.

Rod should ask the real questions. Like why is nobody sure about what year Tulsky was born?

I’m laughing at the scientist part. Admirable but absolutely hilarious and not surprising

Canes are surprised Rantanen isnt’t a grinder and doesn’t like to play dump and chase?
Even if he would have willing to sign, the few games showed him there is no real chemistry and he didn’t want to play that kind of hockey for the next 8 years. That’s why he was talking about fit and why he would have preferred franchises like the Leafs or the Oilers…kinda toxic in many ways.
Almost no home games, the 4 nations break and a bad stretch for both for sure didn’t help him to be convinced to sign.

There’s a lot of Monday morning QB’ing going on.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE thought this was a great move by the Canes when it was done. If someone said otherwise at the time, I’ll give them credit but I wanna see receipts first.
Rumors and ASSumptions

Friedman has come out and said the Canes received an indication from either the Avs or the players camp that he was interested in signing with the Canes - which is presumably why we felt comfortable trying.

The bottom of THAT story is relevant here. RBA has been frustrated the whole time about losing players and this past summer was the biggest standout that way as he was clearly upset. So this more about the whole thing than about this particular guy to me, which is understandable. A coach is going to be upset when players walk and the team doesn’t build the team exactly how he would - to the point of needing some time to understand the contracts didn’t work.

I didn’t hear a “slam”. I’m glad he said it because over the years I agree with his frustration at times. I think the team works too hard to make sure they don’t give a player a cent more than they think they should, but im a fan sitting on a couch. Easy for me to say.

People want to hate the Canes. Or Dundon. For whatever reason so when anything like this comes out they jump all over this.

This happens with your team too.

Rod Brind'Amour is old school. It doesn't surprise me that he may not mesh all that well with his highly-educated, analytics-driven GM.

Jeff O'Neill had a comment a while ago on Overdrive where he basically said, "I had a coach tell me that every day, a guy from the team's analytics department comes down and gives him a nice folder with a report in it. And every day, he politely says thank you, and when the guy leaves the room, he throws it right in the dust bin."

Now I have a hunch at who that coach might me...

I went from being indifferent about rantanen to actively cheering for him to fail. Hope that contract is a boat anchor for the stars

It could also be interpreted as Rantanen, his agent, and/or Colorado failing to let teams know about that before trading him to Carolina.

Pssssh, as the old saying goes, to all you haters:

Let he who has not traded for a star player on an expiring contract, only to realize they won’t sign for you, and for you to have to immediately backtrack, throw the first stone!

This is crap. Rants has had a questionable year by most that have watched him in terms of effort and many who follow the Avs have noted some decline. He didn’t play confused or not buying in with the Canes - he really just mailed in the effort. He was annoyed he was there. Don’t try to blame the system. The forwards aren’t restrained in the system once they’re in the zone. They’re expected to forecheck aggressively and force the d - that’s really it. There’s no emphasis on taking away creativity for simple choices in the zone. TT and Aho never played once like they were hampered. Necas free lanced for years.

Rants didn’t play hard. He wouldn’t take the puck to the net and repeatedly forced passes that weren’t there to teammates when RBA would want him to shoot exactly like he did with the Avs.

Eh, not everyone. Hindsight is 20/20, but Rants lack of motivation has been apparent for some Avs fans for awhile. Case in point

This is just the latest saga that was likely kept hidden behind closed doors in Colorado. His first contract was supposedly tough to negotiate and then Lekhonen's dad called Mikko out for his lack of drive.

Dallas now gets to benefit from his skills, we'll see if he ages we'll.

Sign and trade.

So your genius plan is for the Avs to sign and trade him to Carolina?

Thus costing Carolina more assets (since a signed Rantanen would be worth more than Necas) and having the same issue of Rantanen not wanting to play in Carolina? Except even worse, since he would have signed the contract assuming he’d stay in Colorado.

And this assumes Rantanen’s new contract wouldn’t have a NMC, which it almost assuredly would.

Amazing.
