Brind'Amour throws Tlusty under the bus for the Rantanen situation: "And the question is, should we have known that before we attempted to sign him?"

Wyy is Jiri Tlusty catching strays. I mean he should've been better for the Leafs back then, but those were wild times

To play devils advocate…

If we are to believe what Friedman speculated - that the Rantanen camp thought the Avs were using the Canes interest as a pressure tactic to get him to sign - then, it’s certainly feasible to assume that Rantanen called their “bluff” and said “sure I’d be interested in signing there”. The Avs, in turn, communicate that to the Canes and the Canes take that as them having a shot to sign him and move ahead with the trade.

In that scenario - the Avs just communicated what Rantanen told them, the Canes thought they had a shot and Rantanen thought he was calling a bluff…again all of this is complete speculation

So, the Canes probably did have confidence they could sign him, potentially based on information gained from negotiation gamesmanship. They learned after the fact that the info they based the trade off of was false and were stuck in between and rock and a hard place.

I bet RBA and Tulsky thought they were keeping Rantanen long term, but found out quick, that was not the case and who knows whose fault that was. Hopefully they learned a lesson.
This is all very plausible. Could you solve the issue with Laine next? Prederably at this new thread where people are perplexed by his situation:

I felt the story was that the canes asked Rantanen’s representative if he would consider signing and they said yes.

It turns out it was a lie? Because they thought it was a negotiation tactic they felt it was acceptable business to lie.

That’s how I see it. (If the report is true, they aren’t cool enough to let me sit in and observe)

The canes initially had the impression it could be a thing because they were told it could be a thing.

The agent wasn’t properly positioned to manage -what should not have been- a surprise from Colorado, then risked the player in the playoffs without a deal for a team he didn’t like but he got there because the agent lied and then they caved to Dallas because there wasn’t enough time to legitimately court multiple suitors for a trade and bespoke hundred mil deal hours prior to a deadline.

You could write a book called “not what you should do” or “how to lose your client millions in three easy steps”

For me the situation is kinda like “do I want to go to Fred’s house three Saturday's from now?” Someone asks me that I go “yea maybe, I gotta see what I got going on but il probably let you know” Feigning interest not to be rude but I have no intention of going to Fred’s house. Fred’s house is weird, kinda small and smells like old malted 40 bottles and skittles (cause of the candles).

When the time comes to confirm whether I will be going to Fred’s, I got say “Nah man not really, I can think of at least 4 other places I’d rather be.”

It’s kinda like that. Now if Fred bought extra boneless chicken wings and that wine he knows I like to drink, that’s on him. I never confirmed my attendance.
You are also invited to the Laine solve-party. We would have use for your pragmatic and down-to-earth method of getting to the solutions/truth.

Fred bought nuggets. No such thing as boneless chicken wings

Sounds like what happened was Rantanen's agent was being an asshole in negotiations, so Colorado shipped him out while Rantanen thought Colorado mgmt was playing chicken with the Carolina threat. His agent told Colorado they would sign in Carolina, which Carolina wanted to know, and Rantanen's camp still thinking it was a bluff for some reason was shocked when it happened while Carolina was none the wiser.

Didn’t Tulsky say in his presser about the trade that it was their job to convince him to sign before the season ends? Sounds like he knew he didn’t want to from the start and they tried to change his mind the whole time he was there.

Rod should ask the real questions. Like why is nobody sure about what year Tulsky was born?

Doubt it. Wasn't he blindsided by the trade? I don't think he had any idea it was coming. The canes didn't even talk to him. I actually think Colorado's GM wouldn't let anyone talk to him.
Per Friedman, he did tell Carolina before the trade that he would consider signing in Carolina. At the 16:30 minute mark of his post-deadline wrap up here Friedman says that the Avs let Carolina talk to Rantanen's management, but Rantanen's team thought it was a Colorado bluff to scare Rantanen into coming back to the table. And if you don't want to listen to it, this is my transcript of it:

At some point in time, Carolina was given permission to talk to Rantanen’s reps, and say, ‘if we trade for you, will you sign here.’ And I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, they believed it was a Colorado pressure tactic. Ever since we’ve first talked about this conversation, I’ve had teams and players say to me, ‘this does happen.' That one of the things that will happen is that close to a deadline a team, when talks aren’t really happening, a team might call an agent and say ‘what’s your guy thinking.’ And immediately the agent will say are you asking for me or are you asking for someone else? So Colorado lets Carolina make the call and Rantanen's people were kinda like ‘this is a pressure tactic, but hey, if we were in Carolina we’d thinking about signing there, why not.’ And so they make the trade and Rantanen is in shock. He is in shock. He cannot believe it happened, his representatives are surprised it happened.

And then it turned out that Rantanen didn't want to sign there. The only reason he told Carolina "yes" was because he and his management thought they were calling the Avs' bluff and basically indicating that Rantanen was fine with leaving Denver in the offseason, if it came down to it, and they therefore figured that the Avs would panic and come back with a better offer.

This rant by Rod wasn't only about Rantanen, which is why he brought up other players and Guentzel. Basically saying no player has ever wanted to leave, they just don't get paid like they should in Carolina.

He himself was nickel and dimed by the owner. He's tired of that shit. He's probably frustrated that the people in charge above him are more concerned about maximizing value than doing what it takes to put the team over the top.

If you're someone who thinks they "salvaged" the situation fine, but for him as a coach, he's trying to win the Cup and his team is worse now than it was a month or so ago and it's clear he thinks they don't do enough to make it better.

Call me crazy, but I’ll take going all in for trying to win a Cup over futures.

Are they going to hang a banner for best asset management?

Stankoven and Jankoswki have looked like a better fit in 1 game than Rantanen did in 13. Also, do people not realize that 1st round picks are often used as trade fodder? It’s not “futures”. It’s “trade bait at the draft”.

Carolina’s final offer to Rantanen was apparently $14 x 8. Money wasn’t the issue in this situation.

I think what Carolina couldn’t have factored in was how much or a bitch Rants was/is and that he wouldn’t have showed up to play, was willing to mail it in. Dude was straight up coasting the games I watched - Habs game he was atrocious.

I suspect they may have kept him for a playoff rub but he forced their hand by no showing post trade.
