What does that actually mean? Are they trying to say he's better defensively? Or fore-checking? Because it sounds to me like if you're chasing after guys, you're probably behind in the play, chasing after puck carriers instead of carrying the puck yourself or making plays with it.

Dean leternaeu has done butkus 3 points in 33 games in college hockey. I'm kinda worried hope at least he becomes a brian boyle type. Donny always reaches when he should take the best prospect available and greentree was sitting right there as soon as he whiffed la grabbed him. I have 2015 nhl vibes with that move.

I don’t know, man. I bet there’s guys playing in college that could get 3 assists playing without a stick. If the reports were that he is burying 3 guys a game in the corners, takes 60% of his face-offs, and is shot blocking machine….well, that’s one thing. The reports are, “seems like he played college a year too early”. A year too early? For a HUGE first rounder? That’s like 12 points on the 4th line. That’s “seems like a year too early”. 3 points is like 4 rounds too early in the draft.
And I absolutely wanted the big guy…but I just read TSN 5 minutes before the draft, not make a living supposedly scouting these kids.

Like Lorhei he was supposed to play another year before jumping to the NCAA - and BC is #1 in the nation, that's a tough spot to jump in a year early let alone earn big minutes/opportunities.

I am going to be patient with Letourneau as he is a total unicorn...and totally raw, but it would be a lot easier to be patient if Big Sween hadn't botched a handful of other previous 1st round selections...and if Greentree wasn't exactly the type of player BOS could use in their system right now. I know he had his warts leading up to the draft, but Greentree is making an impact all over the ice in various ways. Letourneau is still trying to figure out where the dining hall is at BC.

Sweeney is the one announcing the pick but can we directly blame him as I have to think the scouts see a player far more than he does? I`ll blame him for picking the scout

There’s a reason Greentree was passed over 25 times. He had 90 points in 64 games last year and was still left to the bottom of the first. Using his OHL points to make some sort of value judgement on him is pretty surface level.
It is more common for "HUGE first rounders" to take a bit more time to grow into their body. I think that's why they are saying he looks to have come in a year too early, and the poor stats back that up, he needs to grow into his body still.
He's a big boy, he's likely not hitting his peak for a looooong time, we really need some patience here.
Remember, Tage Thompson broke out in his draft + 6 year as a full time NHLer, big boys are always a project.

The thing is, I know about the the questions around Greentree in his draft year and was supportive of the Bruins drafting Letourneau. Bruins Network compared Greentree to Kaliyev on Twitter and look where Kaliyev is right now. However, Greentree is scoring in several different ways and playing dominant hockey THIS year.
It’s not “surface level” to discuss a player when he improve on his weaknesses AND strengths in D+1.
And…while Sweeney didn’t know we would crater as an organization at the time, it shows a lack of foresight to select a player that would need literally everything to go right to contribute in an area of need, like 1-2C.
Was Letourneau the best player available? Were Greentrees weaknesses insurmountable? What would need to happen for Letourneau’s growth to continue in D+1?
These are valid questions.
Sweeney’s team drafted Letourneau and gave him their blessing to go to BC. I am sure he has learned a few things there…but he certainly hasn’t played a lot of meaningful hockey.
Is that surface level?

I wasn’t necessarily going at you there - lots of comments just looking at his point totals. And many people act like Letourneau was going off the board (like, say, Lohrei) when he was ranked around there everywhere.
Up until this year people pined for Kaliyev. And I was told recently by many on here you can’t evaluate a draft pick for several years. But if Letourneau was putting up 75 points in the Q this year everyone would be fawning over him.
