I know you guys love to shit on Simmer, but the guy is a good dude. Met him a few times (from my mom's home town) and he was great to my kids when they were little playing at a charity thing he did. Also coached against him in a baseball tournament once. Nice guy.

There, said my peace, you guys can go back to crapping on him as a player... ;)
I’m not shitting on Sim. I liked him for what he was. And he was still better than many of the dregs from that era. As per @doublechili posted… a lot of his grief was due to the circumstances of his signing. Going off of that, I was really throwing shade at Snow/Wang.

I’ve never been an MDC fan but in 2018 he scored 1 point per game at Bridgeport.

Fast forward 4 years later, same coach similar surrounding talent and his productivity is down 50%. Based on 2018 you’d think he’d be a solid AHL talent.

Not sure what happened. Has he lost his confidence or played with weaker linemates?
Re: MDC, I had forgotten that besides passing on Nylander, etc. when we took MDC, we also had the option of letting BUF have the 2014 pick and we could have kept our 2015 pick. So then the question is, what's worth more: the #5 overall pick in a weaker draft, or the #21 pick in a very strong draft.

BUF ended up trading our 2015 pick to OTT, and they took Colin White at #21. The next 4 picks (22 thru 25) were Samsonov, Boeser, Konecny and Roslovic. Or maybe we would've taken Beau at 21 instead of trading up to get him, and we would have still had the 33rd and 72nd picks that we traded up to get Beau. Sebastian Aho was taken 35th. Anthony Cirelli was taken 72nd by TB with the pick we sent them.

I’ve wondered on this too, but have also come to realize that 2014 ended up being a reasonably strong draft too.

Fiala, Tuch and Pasternak, Larkin are first round picks from that draft, but normally ignored from the more obvious ones… Ehlers, Nylander.

Whether he scored or not MDC looks washed up. The guy doesn't skate well even at the AHL level.

and there were folks on this board that swore if we gave him time we would come around and be a solid 3rd liner.

I hated that draft pick from the minute we got him. I always wanted Nylander

I had the same feeling, I remember being at the highly touted draft party just to hear tons of isles fans cheer the MDC pick when I was hoping for Nylander missing two letters from nyISlander was more of a perfect fit for our fans to write on a poster board.

Those are two different things. I was among the minority that didn't want to take MDC in 2014 because his 5v5 stats weren't great and his videos were mostly "easy" goals. I also wanted Nylander.

But after we had him and he had no trade value, what made sense was just to keep him and see what happened (hope he filled out and/or developed his skating/game to the point where he could be effective on a lower line). Unfortunately, it's looking like he's not an NHLer. But there was no downside to keeping him around.

Yep, really wanted Nylander.

Dal Colle went just where everyone said he would, but always wanted Nylander at 5.

Dal Colle seemed like the safe pick without upside. For whatever reason I assumed his lack of foot speed would serve JT well since he didn't mesh with speed.

I was big on Sam Bennett if I recall and was annoyed Calgary took him a spot before us. My initial thought was this was another Columbus taking Ryan Johansen front of us situation and the same with Pietrangelo / St. Louis.

The league was changing at the time we drafted Dal Colle. Power forwards were being replaced with better skating players. Just grinding out along the boards was going away as more teams were going for stretch passes, carries up ice from the defense, and less teams were playing dump and chase. Dal Colle would have been a better pick for us 5 years earlier.

He has never projected as a power forward in his draft class he was a pure sniper (more of a PP specialist) in juniors. He was quoted by several scouts/rankings as having one of the best shots in the class.

Just remembered that the AHL championship trophy is the Calder Cup.

Brings up the interesting question… have any players won the AHL Calder Cup championship followed by the Calder Memorial trophy for NHL Rookie of the year the following year?

Shouldn’t have to fight because you make a sweet clean hit on the boards
