Recalled/Assigned: Brennan Othmann recalled from Hartford

Othmann is already better than that bum Brodzinski. Who cares if someone claims Brodzinski on waivers… oh no Hartford lost there 30 year old career AHLer captain! They have Riley Nash down there and have been doing just fine without the great Brodzinski. Anisimov is now down there. Waiving Brodzinski to keep other better players is worth the risk of the cascade effect on Hartford and then some.
My only fear is the Rangers knack for turning offensive prospects into middling checking forwards.

If getting reps on the PP in the AHL can improve his offensive game, you leave him in Hartford.

I don't want him rotting on the bench in the NHL.

Exactly this.

The same posters who want to keep Othmann up right now, on the 4th line getting 12 mins a night with no PP time, will be complaining in a year or two that the Rangers can't develop forwards and always rush their prospects.

Can't win on here.

It’s a good opportunity to get Othmann some experience. Kakko, Chytil, and Pitlick will play over him unless he really explodes.

I think in time, when Kakko comes back, the lineup will shake out better for Othmann to play with someone better than f***ing Brodzinski and Bonino, who I like but just is simply a 4C at this point. Othmann needs more talent around him, in literally any capacity. He likes to shoot. You can see the offensive awareness and bias in his game. You can see the skill. I see a lot of JT Miller in him, except for the position part. I dont see him developing into a middle 6 checking player just because he is up with the Rangers getting bottom 6 minutes and maybe eventually some PP2 time. The kid is turning 21 tomorrow, he isn’t some completely raw teenager. If he makes this year’s roster better overall then thats whats most important above all else. I think he will get some looks in Wheeler’s spot, but again if anything the lines will shake out better with Kakko back and then also whomever we add at the deadline. I think Lavy favored putting him with Brodzinski in his 1st NHL game since they have been linemates in HFD & the familiarity certainly couldn’t hurt.

Could you have asked for a better debut? Sure. Othmann could've scored a hat trick. LOL! He certainly didn't look out of place out there. Great debut! But all that said it was against Chicago. So it was the perfect team to play against in his NHL debut. Now the goal is to not to look out of place and overwhelmed against some of the league's tougher teams.

Would like to see him play against Vancouver, that will be a good test for him. But pretty impressive with his debut

I thought he looked good and not out of place. Hopefully it’s an extended look so he can get adjusted to the league. Don’t mind if he goes back down for top line minutes and PP1 afterwards. They are doing the right thing development wise. Same with Cuylle last year and this year.

Let's also not forget strength of competition. A depleted Chicago team probably isn't THAT far off from some of the AHL teams around. I would like to see how does with pace and physicality of a legit NHL team.

No disrespect to Chicago... I think they will freely admit that the team iced last night was depleted and even when healthy... the playoffs weren't guaranteed by any means.

Bump Wheeler down to 3 and move up Othmann with Kreids and Mika.

As much as I'd like the ice time for 78 that would come with this, I don't see it working for the same reason Tarasenko didn't really work on a line with those two last year.

Othmann is generally a shoot first player and those two are not great distributors. When Mika distributes at even strength, he's usually skating right into the RW side of the ice and looking for Kreider..he rarely goes to his off side and looks for the RW, and many of their 5-on-5 chances are off the rush since Mika's not a great forechecker and tends to float high a lot. That's not a formula for a lot of looks for Othmann.

Letting him play with Brodzinski and his motor is a good move, I just wish they'd put them with Cuylle to make it a physical line with scoring ability instead of keeping Bonino in the middle (let Brodz play center), and bump Bonino down to the 4th line with Goodrow and Vesey.

I think its fine for a while w Brodz, and not much concerned who 3rd guy is,
if the coaches think they'll add some O, maybe its Vesey -
but whether Bo, Cuylle or Vesey, for these next few games, don't think it matters all that much

This was done for a few shifts with Wheeler taking the fighting major and Othmann didn't look out of place. I liked his game overall. He looked like a pro and played that style of game.

Now, the team that he got to face last night, with the exception of Bedard and a few others, was a glorified AHL team. It's part of the reality. The good news is that Montreal tomorrow has legit NHL players, but a step up in talent from Chicago. I would not mind if this is done for a little while in that game as well.

Unless Othmann pops off, he's being sent back to Hartford, but that is the best course of action for him. When he goes down, he needs to play the right side. That is where his future is with this roster.

Welcome to Mount Rushmore, son. It's a hard lig. This was a foreseeable rush job. I don't watch Hartford games but let's stop tracking how many points he gets by teeing off from the circle on the PP. He needs to be molded into a pro. Yikes, that Mount Rushmore moment was something.

It's certainly weird in games we're losing that we'd rather play Brodzinski, Bonino or Goodrow than see what we have in Othmann

Nobody wants him playing 4th line, there's a perfectly good spot on with Zib and kreider that Wheeler is just sitting on and beyond that, you could use him with Cuylle and whoever on a 3rd line. If you dont need him and aren't playing him then yes send him down but this team needs a winger/someone to replace guys who can't score in the worst way

Hey, his spirit clearly wasn't being broken in Hartford. We needed to step in and give ourselves the best chance at grinding him into dust

It’s like the Rangers are scared of catching lightning in a bottle. Othmann looked great in game one, nailed to the bench in games two and three. Edstrom looked great in game one, banished forever.

Yeah, I'm not sure the hesitation to playing a couple of younger players. What's the worst case?
