Well he is doing a lot better then Shanahan, missed the playoffs after only 4 hours on the job. Talk about running a team into the ground. #fireshanny

See...I knew I was missing something ..... I couldn't see it through all the smoke and mirrors...

No one is saying they aren't trying to win. Its that profits have always been first. The would rather qualify for the playoffs every year then rebuild like the way Buffalo is doing and loading up on picks and be crappy for a few seasons.

So the argument is that if another team came into the market and were successful on the ice, it would motivate the Leafs to finally go into full tank-rebuild mode?

ie. This new team is doing well, so if we want to maintain our fanbase, we ought to get really bad for a few years while they complete for a Cup?

Sorry, not buying it.

The "we know best" is usually the 13-27 crowd...ya know those ones who have little life experiences but know everything about everything... a great man once said .." The older I get the less I know..."

At my age... I think I'm down to knowing how to tie my shoe laces and not peeing on the back of the toilet...:sarcasm:

I disagree, I think the majority of the "we know best" crowd are the arrogant, disgruntled older farts who think they know better because they've been around the block longer and have suffered longer. There's a lot of condescension from that crowd, and that in turn breeds more condescension.

Not stereotyping the entire group, because there are reasonable older folk around here, but from what I've seen, the majority of people making arrogant statements are of the older variety (30+) based on their comments.

That's not to say there aren't young arrogant posters around here. I just see the worst stuff coming from a few older guys.

and those arrogant, disgruntled old farts have been on point and ahead of the curve since before Burke took over and well, been pretty right about things.

Whatever the age and I suspect it may span ages, it often boils down to them getting an idea of what they think should be done in their head and until the Leafs do exactly that, they'll whine and moan about it.

In other words, "Wah! Wah! Wah! Do it my way! Wah! Wah! Wah!".

i don't really buy it either, but i think the argument is that if the GTA got a second team then the Leafs would have to compete for the attention and entertainment money of hockey fans in the area. and if it were the Panthers or Phoenix relocating there, it would be a team that is closer to being good than the Leafs, who are about as far off as a team can be. and the type of cosmetic fixes that the Leafs use to signal improvement - shipping out "entitled" guys, changing the culture, firing the coach - might prove less effective in convincing fans to continue to shell out. which might end up triggering some real change.

like i say, i don't really buy it.

Arrogance.

I haven't seen much arrogance except the crowd who are adamant about being right, even when the product on ice contradicts them. Can Shanahan do anything about the biased reffing we get continually?

This group royally sucks in an epic way. Why replace the coach, the players might not like him either?

i want the Leafs to stop being one of the worst teams in the league. i don't think it can happen when the guys in charge have shown no indication that they understand the nature and the gravity of the team's weaknesses.

I have to agree with this, they already do the "fix it now model" when they don't have any competition.

Could you imaging the sell off of picks and youth "to fix it now" if there was real dire risk of losing $.

Right now they do it "just to get at least 1 playoff round in"

It would be utterly nuts if they did not max out season ticket subscriptions.

This is nothing but more smoke and mirrors by MLSE and Leafs fans are already falling for it again.

What is smoke an mirrors? They hired a guy. It's that simple. Why does it have to be anything more than they hired a guy.

They aren't saying all problems are fixed, they aren't saying that the cup is ours next year.

Exactly what is the smoke and mirrors?

Reminds me of an old MASH episode where Hawkeye tells Radar, "if you don't know what to say, just say "that's Horse and Buggy thinking".

He may as well have said "smoke and mirrors".

At some point a portion of Leaf fans turned into 60's radicals who always think "the man" is out to get them.

It's hard to blame anyone if they crack under the strain of following this team.

Putting a fanbase through stuff like this is bound to produce crazies.

I have said this a million times, they can retool very easily this team. I would not even sweat it. The simple way is this.

Over the next 2-3yrs...

New coach

Trade Clarkson
Trade Lupul
Trade Dion
Trade Franson
Trade Gleason
Trade Reimer

Sign Kules if cap friendly trade at deadline or let walk
Sign Bolland if cap friendly trade at deadline or let walk
Sign Raymond same deal here

Drop the two Mc's
Drop Orr

Replace brawlers with 25ish yr olds

Get the kids playing in OPTIMUM POINT GETTING POSITIONS and trade some down the line.

Try and harmonize the team to the 22-27 age bracket and keep ONLY THE PLAYERS WHO PLAY THE WAY YOU ENVISION YOUR TEAM PLAYING IN 3yrs. If they lack heart and compete send them on there way.

If they can do 80% of that they will be well on there way to a brighter future. The key is in harmonizing the age of the team with the right staff in the system coming up to challenge for position at 22-23 yrs old.

One thing is that people might argue that DeBore will play this boring style of hockey...

But why do his Devil Teams have Elite puck possession stats?

You answered your own question, they hired a guy right after another epic collapse to divert Leafs fans attention to something else. The owners have been hiring and firing people for over forty years but they have never fixed anything.

Have they been hiring the right people for over forty years?

I certainly believe they are trying to win. If all they want is money, then winning cups is the best way to do it. Yes, the fans are still coming out now, but it's actually nothing compared to the bandwagon that would be created and the re-involvment of the disillusioned masses.

The problem is, I just don't think they understand what it's going to take. They have no problem firing people and demanding improvement, but always seem to believe they just need a better GM who can make a few moves to put us over the top, when what we've really needed ever since the previous lockout is to take a few step back and build a winner from scratch, instead of repeated patchwork and addons.

Joey,

You're making too much sense.

What the **** are you doing here?

I hope that the Toronto media asks Tim Leiweke some tough questions on Monday regarding the Leafs despicable peformance this season and whether he still has 100% confidence in current Leafs GM Dave Nonis.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=448947

The Mimico, Ont. native will be formally introduced during a news conference Monday in Toronto that can be seen live on TSN, TSN.ca and TSN GO at 11am et/8am pt. It can also be heard on TSN Radio 1050 or on TSN.ca/Toronto.

They don't play a boring brand of hockey anymore. And to the people who claims that he's bad with young players, he doesn't have much to work with. Like really ? I don't blame him for benching jacobsen, tedenby and etc. Adam Henrique and Jon Merill are really great players under Pete Deboer

You're implying Leaf fans have the attention span of a brook trout..see a shiny new object and forget about it all...

I think we all know what the Leafs haven't done for the last 47 years, I think we all know about how sad the finishes have been the last 3 years... I doubt ANYONE has a warm fuzzy feeling inside all of a sudden because Shanny was hired.

Its as simple as TL seeing an opportunity and he took it. Just like there is no second shooter on the grassy knoll, there is no Alien in Area 51.. there is no Leaf conspiracy to distract our attention away from the poor finish.

Tl went after a guy who is well connected, its that simple.

They brought him in to do to Dion what he did to Janney way back in the day. Easiest way to get the guy to lift his NTC and ship him off. ;-)
