Not to be cold blooded, but if Gally really wants to play on a contender, he should agree to terminate his contract. I think he's more than fine as a 13th forward next season and we need an upgrade on Pezz anyway. Entertain the idea of a buyout next offseason.
But @ReHabs had a good point that the money you’re saving from his buyout gets you a player that is both better than him and Pezzetta. Having him sit in the pressbox does nothing and likely only stirs shit up in the dressing room.

I don't think we're so desperate for cap space that we need the money to get a better 13th forward. Why make the cap penalty more severe when we can deal with it for now? Not to mention that I don't think he's a bad option as a 13th forward. He'd give more energy and compete than a guy like ABB and he won't be fatigued that badly which is his main issue.

I also don't think the longest tenured Hab who's praised on his work ethic and was considered as a choice for captain several times throws a hissy fit because he's getting paid 6.5 million to be a 13th forward. If Pezz can have a positive and professional attitude while being healthy scratched for 30 straight games then Gally should too when he obviously can't keep up anymore.

I don’t think we can trust this coach to actually put him in the pressbox. He wouldn’t do that to a veteran. I mean he still insists on using him on the PP despite Gallagher being a very clear negative

And I think any cap space will help considering we would likely want to extend both Hutson and Laine at the same time.

The best thing that could happen to the Habs is IF Gally would decide to retire after this season. But we know it won’t happen with so much money on the table still.

Gallagher's lost his wheels sadly but I don't think he's getting moved in a trade. If not LITRetirement, then like you say: buyout.

A good way to think about a buyout is to think how much would the roster replacement cost for the duration of the buyout penalty? Gallagher's buyout caphit is 1.75, 4.25, 1.75, 1.75 over four years -> if we take the highest hit of 4.25, the difference between his cap hit (6.5) and 4.25 is 2.25m. Can we find a player who can contribute what Gallagher does (over a full season) at 2.25m? I think so.

If you want to be more reasonable to the team then take a mean cap penalty of 3m, and the difference with his cap hit is 3.5m. I think we can definitely find a superior replacement at 3.5m.

His final two years of cap hit would only be 1.75 and his 1.75 hit next season opens up a one year deal at 4.75 for a veteran RHD. This leaves us with a 2.25 savings in year 2 which is still better than paying him 6.5M in a year where he will in all likelihood be permanently cooked. There is no option to accept a mean hit so there is no point in talking about that and there is little point in discussing LTIR as contrary to what fans seem to spout, a player needs to have a confirmed long term injury that will need the proper documentation in order for insurance to kick in and pay his salary.....otherwise you are flirting with insurance fraud.

He is definitely available at 50% retention or at 75% retention if Hughes can get a 3rd party involved. This would be 1.95M for two years of Gallagher for the team that acquires him. I could easily see Vancouver taking that with their leadership issues and Gally accepting a trade that would send him home. It will require us taking back a player that we will bury in Laval and or a 3rd or later pick and/or a B/C prospect.

Gallagher to Vancouver is my bet.

I find it hard to believe that Hughes and MSL won't be on the same page. Hughes won't buy him out just because he's afraid that the coach won't listen to him and plays Gally anyways.

Which would be for the following season where we can buy out Gally with a less severe cap penalty for the future. Unless we acquire a stud in this upcoming offseason, we can handle the cap of a 6.5 million 13th forward for at least one season.
