Gallagher falling off massively during this contract was the easiest thing to see in the world. He should have been traded when he had value. Hilariously Bergevin, when he's sentimental about a player, gets absolutely hosed in contracts.. but when he's not, he either f***s the situation beyond repair like Subban or got them on good contracts like MaxPac.

This was one where he let his sentimentality for Gallagher overcome the prudent business decision on that contract.

He came full circle with Gallagher. He had him on a pretty team friendly long term deal prior to the current 6 year deal.

What would Gallagher have to do stat wise to live up to his contract? 50 points?

I never really looked at him in that way. Success for Gallagher used to look like a guy who can score goals, and the guy who could be introduced on any line to jumpstart it. He used to be a puck hound who was tough to deal with in the trenches.

He isn't the same guy anymore, but he's still putting the puck in the net.

That's a very hard trade to make from an organizational stand point tho, and leaves a very big hole in the locker room, those heart & soul players don't come around often.

Would we have made it to the finals without Gally? How much do you value that memory of the Vegas game? Because that memory, I'll have for a lifetime. How important is Gallagher to this team right now with his experience? His legs may of fallen off, but he's still an incredibly important of the room, if not more so because he's the last guy from the old group. He's also been one of our best players this year too, interesting to see how many he can pot this year... on pace for 35.. hahaha. I'll be happy with 25.

Silver lining that contract hasn't really screwed us up considering the status of our team, and the cap is on the rise.

He should probably get 30 goals and 20 assists to be worth his contract.

Gallagher only reached 50 points twice in his career.

Most on this board, myself included, wrote him off completely. Zero value. If he reaches 75% of value (say 15-20goals), plus his intangiables, unique role in playing in front of the net, I would be more than happy. Asking him to "live up" to his contract (which was a reward for prior underpaiment contract) will only result in frustration.

You have to think that any combo of 50 pts is more than living up to the contract. Gally is a 32 year old winger making 6.5m, here are all the 30 to 35 year old wingers with a cap hit between 6 and 7m

Tyler Toffoli Age 32 6M Just signed for 4 years coming of 55 pt season
Taylor hall Age 33 6M last year of a 4 yr contract- probably more broken down than Gally at this point
Ondrej Palat age 33 6M 2 more years after this year has not hit 50 points since 2017
Alex Kilorn age 35 6.25M - has 2 more years after this one 36 pts last yr
Tom Wilson age 30 in 1st year of 7 yr 6.5M AAV contract. has only broken 50 pts once but brings other things
Kris kreider age 33 2 more years at 6.5M - okay that is a great contract
Anders lee, age 34 1 year after this one at 7M. 37 pts last yr, 50 the yr before

Probably does not need 50 to earn that contract relative to similar aged/paid wingers.

Seems like the 30-35 year old centres paid 6-7 M have fared better (kadri, Lee, Schenn, Nelson)

I'm sure his personality and work ethic are good for the younger players too. His contract sucks (always has even if I trolled people here when he signed it).

Even when he sucks, I can never hate him.

Hope he continues to have a solid year.
