Player Discussion Brendan Gallagher: all heart, no hands

100 goals over the last 4 seasons (258 games), yet HE is the problem... OK.
The problem is his six year contract at $6 million dollars per year. Frankly, if you want to squander cap space, I would have preferred giving KK, a hopefully ascending asset, that contract, than retaining a clearly diminishing asset. Complete incompetency.

How should the Habs had known that KK would sign an offer sheet at 6,1 M $ . Gally's new contract was signed since long while. Gally, when he signed, was the top RW on that team. KK, barely a third liner struggling. And even if Gally wwould had signed a 4-5 M $ per season contract or be traded, Habs would not had equal the Canes offer, ever.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that he never should have been given that long term contract. It was clear to almost everyone on here that a player with his style and mileage typically doesn’t age well. Most of us knew it was awful the moment it was announced. And he’s already very obviously on the decline. Hell, he was declining even before being extended..5 seasons to go after this one. That contract is one of the worst in the league and will only continue looking worse.

I respect Gally for everything he has done, but man is it ever going to be awful watching him fulfill that contract. And it sucks saying that, because the guy bleeds CH and just seems like an all-around great dude.

Gallagher has always been a cog. Unfortunately he's operating with a broken tooth now. What is astounding is the number of people on this board who saw this eventual outcome 7 years ago yet our management didn't.

He misses Tatar
I was told he'd be so much better away from Danault
tatar scored at a 50 point pace last year - during the regular season. But it seems he's also on the decline.

Always hoped Tatar-Danault-Gallagher would still be good when the young players like Suzuki emerged. But it just seems that Tatar and Gally declined, and Phil is at best a complementary offensive player. He wasn't going to be able to carry them. Losing their line is a big loss to the team. But they declined, there was no continuing on with them.

I smashed my face twice when I saw Gallagher make a back pass to Suzuki in the offensive zone tonight, couldnt believe it on the moment, was on shock.

That is a contract that is now unmovable. The best we can do is minimize the damage and just buy him out in 2 years and swallow the cap loss. Incredible incompetence.

The league is full of this type of contracts to older players. Gally was underpaid for a long time. You can see it that way. He gave it all for this team.

We are now starting to see how slowly Gallagher is declining.
The next 5 years will gradually get more painful to watch.
Maybe Vancouver, Seattle, Edmonton or Calgary could be interested.

I'm not defending his utterly bad contract, but maybe his play is a result of the team. Comparing with the same style of player, a guy like Perry is 36 and still playing, Gallagher is 29. Both are slow skating players and both play their game in front of the net. I'm not saying Gallagher is warranted that type of long contract but I would advise patience with him. 4 points in 11 games on one of the worst start the team ever had plus a cinderella hangover is not catastrophic. He has more points than KK!

The last 3/4 years of this contract are going to be painful. I’d give a 2024 first rd pick to Ari just to get rid of it. I even like Gallagher buts he’s taken a beating over his career.

You aren't seriously trying to compare Perry to Gally, are you? Really?

:help:

I agree the contract is bad but last time he broke a hand didn't it take him a really long time to be effective again?

They should definitely trade him because of the term on this deal since the last couple years will be tough, but I think people are tapdancing on his grave a bit prematurely.

I also want him traded because I don't like the idea of him being the next captain one bit, would really much prefer it be Petry or Suzuki.

8 points in his last 11 games. Not bad for a guy whose supposed to be anchor.

He is a warrior ... an aging warrior .... who has battled A LOT. Glad he has 8 points in 11 games, but I believe most of them are assists. He isn't scoring as much, but neither is the rest of the team. Maybe he finds a new line to excel on ... but, I think we really start regretting the contract in 1-3 years.

People have short memory. This has happened over and over with Gally, remember. All the times people have said he's finished and he always bounce back to proves them wrong. Everytime it's the same damn thing, the same people calling him a bum will be cheering him when he plays the hero. I cannot believe the guy has been battling all his life to prove his worth. He battles to make plays and he battles for his reputation. Constantly.
