That’s an insane gamble for a team that has difficulty extending its stars.

This is a copy cat league. Carolina effectively did the same thing with Rantanen. They ended up profiting big time. They got more for Rantanen at the deadline than they gave up for him.

Yes, there is a risk of injury. But statistically the risk of a season ending injury for any one player is very low. If they give up two 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd for Robertson, they have a reasonable chance of recouping that.

With all that said, the point isn't that Ottawa should sign him to this offer sheet - the point is the fact that Ottawa or another team could weaponize a one year offer sheet means that Robertson is getting moved before July 1st. Dallas will get a better return for him now than they will through an offer sheet.

Any package that starts with pick #9 is a better package for Dallas than two possibly playoff 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd.

This is the most sane reaction.

I think we need to collectively take a step back and realize that this is the best outcome possible.

We got close to a fair return for Tkachuk who controlled his destination. Florida could’ve probably offered less and we might’ve been handcuffed. I think Brady’s camp did us a solid by letting us know in advance that he wouldn’t stay and by facilitating a trade.

I also think the other teams Brady would’ve been willing to waive for (Minny, Carolina, Vegas) in theory were pretty much just used as leverage for Ottawa. It’s clear he wanted to go to Florida so that 4-team list was smoke and mirrors.

So this leaves us in a bizzare position as a young team who just made the playoffs 2 years in a row, but it doesn’t leave us stranded either.

It’ll take time for the shock to go away and people will slowly realize that this was the only option, and when you look at it that way it becomes easier to be positive in a very negative time.

To clarify, I wasn't blaming the media for Brady leaving, I was pointing out what a stupid thing it was to say that the trade is "a total bomb".

I read that as him saying it was a bad return but reading it again I think he may have just been saying it's a massive shock.

This tweet by Garrioch is more of what I mean:

Yeah no **** the team isn't better as a result of trading the captain for draft picks. What incredible analysis Brucie. That's why the Sun pays you the big bucks.

I think he meant total bomb as in total bombshell. Not in that it was a great return.

I think it was a fair return considering the NMC and leverage Brady had. I think bringing him back would have been a huge distraction that could have torpedoed the season. I don't think it's surprising that it's now coming out that his teammates didn't want him back. The "great leader" narrative was bogus the last two seasons. When the coaching staff has to plead with the captain to change the way he plays so the team can try and win... that's not great leadership. He had checked out. Everyone could see it.

But I agree that Staios has A LOT of work to do in the next 3 weeks.

I'm glad it's over. The first 6 years were fun. But we were never winning with him. He was never staying here. It had to happen. Glad Staios just ripped the bandaid off.

With all the cheering that he’s been traded you’d think we’d be better lol

This wasn’t at any of you just in general btw

I think mostly those that are happy he’s gone is 100% political sadly.

Thank you Ottawa Media, you know what you did

I'm glad the bandaid was ripped off this summer instead of waiting another year.

The return we would have got a year from now almost certainly would have been quite a bit worse.

If it was going to happen at some point, better it happened now so we could maximize his return.

The size. His play style. His young age. His really solid numbers.

The return for this player is laughable.

People are still on this train, huh.

The guy is often a defensive liability in a league where more and more top 6 forwards throw the body, block shots, fight for pucks in corners and defend well.

The talking points for Brady Tkachuk for anyone being honest: physical, can get you 30+ goals if you give him first billing in the powerplay and pair him with talent.

The comparison for Brady Tkachuk is not superstars. It's slightly more than what Kevin Fiala returned for Minnesota.

So he listed the same four teams most star players give these days but let's face it, he forced his way to Florida the same way his brother did.

Man this league is in trouble when the majority of elite players only care about Vegas and Florida lol.
And yet somehow Minny is now a destination. Go figure.

Addition by subtraction.

He became a point of controversy and embarrassment and became a distraction more than he contributed to the team.

Ottawa media is a joke compared to somewhere like MTL or TO. Tons of American markets are just as tough too, specifically the North Eastern cities.

Man, you're looking for a scapegoat. You don't need to look any farther than Brady, a man who would complain about all of the attention his controversial shit netted him.
