Stone got Brannstrom, Lindberg and a 2nd. Hardly an example of an extension leading to a massive paymentSign and trades happen semi-frequently, whether they are expressed as such or not is somewhat irrelevant. Karlsson and Stone immediately come to mind as examples.
This thread states before the July 1st and does not specifically mention the off-season.
Columbus would have to be absolutely crazy to move Mateychuk or Johnson.I'd like to see Columbus go after him but honestly I don't think they'd have the pieces since they just moved Jiricek and since Lindstrom is still sidelined.
Only untouchables IMO would be Fantilli and Werenski. What does that leave?
At center you'd have Monahan (no interest to Ottawa) and Sillinger.
At wing you'd have Marchenko, Chinakhov, and Kent Johnson. While Johnson looks like a star, he's been injured so much the last 2 seasons that you'd be selling low on him. I doubt Ottawa is interested in a Russian at this point in time.
At D you have Provorov (UFA), Severson (bad), Fabbro, and Mateychuk (our top D prospect).
Unless Ottawa is in love with Sillinger and would want to take Sillinger + Mateychuk + CBJ 1st 2025 (lottery protected) then I don't see a move.
I'd recommend looking at literally any trade from like the past decade.A deal based around McTavish would be fine by me as a Sens fan
Could see a package based around Mercer + Nemec from the Devils if they can make it work cap-wise
The real question is, would Rantanen want to sign a deal just to get traded?

And then lower your expectations.

Karlsson played a full year in SJS before signing his new contract. Not a sign and trade in the slightest.
The thread states "after missing the playoffs again".
The concept of an "extended rental" is something fans use to cope, rather than something that meaningfully increases trade values.
Timo Meier comes to mind immediately. How many PPG powerforwards in the last decade have been traded in their prime?
Only name that comes to mind is his brother Matthew, and he returned a guy coming off of a 115P season, a defenseman coming off a 44P season and a 1st round pick.
Brady is going to return an absolute haul if traded because old school NHL GMs absolutely adore players like him and do desperate things to acquire them.
Sign and trades occur. They do not lead to meaningful changes in value.Okay so you concede that sign and trades happen with agreed contracts being in place.
It may state after missing the playoffs again, but why not try to optimize value for Tkachuk if the Sens are likely out of it by the trade deadline. It does not expressly state off-season and therefore I would interpret it as the end of Sens playoff chances this season, with the thread overall relying on the Sens likely missing this year.
I’m not sure how suggesting Colorado trades Rantanen is coping though, but go off my dude.

It's copium to assume you could get Rantanen to sign off on going from a contender to a dumpster.
It's copium to assume that this magical extension makes his value go way up. You're trying to sell a rental to a team that in this case is actively selling by pretending a magical extension will change everything.
Signing a player to a UFA market value extension does not add meaningful value.I guess if it’s considering copium to keep Rantanen then we really have different ideas of the term
Lmao yeah an extended player with team control isn’t worth more than a player who is a pending UFA
Timo Meier comes to mind immediately.
Meier in the 2 years prior to trade:
0.955 ppg, 0.492 gpg
Brady Tkachuk this year and last year
0.971 ppg, 0.476 gpg
Totally agree on Johnson. I think for Mateychuk (safely projected as a top-4 in a year and could potentially end up top pairing) it's close but you gotta give to get and Brady Tkachuk would be an amazing get.Columbus would have to be absolutely crazy to move Mateychuk or Johnson.
NHL gms are willing to pay for it, but the amount is vastly overstated.I'd argue Meier isn't that comparable to Tkachuk as a powerforward for the reason that he doesn't fight very much (usually one time a year), while Tkachuk is a legit heavyweight.
You can say it shouldn't matter much, and I'd agree with you, but NHL GMs clearly think it is tremendously valuable and are willing to pay for it.
I'd point to what Anderson and Jeannot were able to return, despite having terrible seasons.

Alright, then we can go to the Matthew return and subtract for the fact that Brady is significantly less productive and significantly worse defensively?not only that but if Meiers name was captain Timo Tkachuk it would have been a different return.
