This is my biggest fear with the kid. He absolutely needs more muscle to play his game at the NHL level. Injuries can happen to anyone, but you really increase the risk when you play a physical game and don't have the muscle to protect yourself properly.

I tend to disagree with you on this

I think as he puts on more muscle he'll be more effective playing his game but sites I've looked at have him listed at 6 foot 1 or 2 and north of 190. He will get bigger but that ain't small. He dowsnt seem to be shying away and he wins his share of battles. eventually he'll win more. And this is 2018 so there isn't two goons on every roster looking for it.

The team needs him up for all 82 games for marketing purposes and he will not be sent down
ya that's one way of looking at it

another way of looking at it based on personal observation is that he appears quite ready to play in the nhl

Meh I think 82 games is pushing but something like 20-40 definitely should happen. Even EK got time down there. Unfortunately he's better than 90% of our roster tho so he isn't going anywhere.

Which is unfortunate. I would rather see him down in Belleville for 1 year or even half a season to get some time in wtbs like batherson brown chlapik and possibly white to build some chemmy and develop his game

Sending him to the World Juniors like they did with Lazar would be pretty cool of the Sens. I remember I saw Lazar as the future captain of the franchise after he was on McDavids wing at the WJCs lol

Yeah I feel like everyone is always saying prospects need to bulk up like crazy.

He’s already pretty big if that’s his height and weight. He’s probably not going to be skating around at 210 or something lol (which is good, as it would start to hamper his game at that point).

I don't mean bigger, as putting on fighting weight to deal with goons. I mean, more overall body and core strength to handle giving and receiving hits. Being able to have the strength to handle the physical punishment in front of the net, along the corners and around the boards. He's always going to have a bit of a stringy frame, but you want it wiry strong, so he isn't flung head first into the boards on a regular basis.

They got the donuts? Excellent....
At the combine, Tkachuk was measured at 6'3", 191.52 pounds. US hockey has him also listed at 6'3.
Tkachuk needs to get bigger. He hasn't grown into his frame.

If only we still had Randy Lee around. There was a guy who knew how to mold a young man with his bare hands!

6'3 and 191lbs is pretty damn skinny. I'm 6'0 and 200lbs and I still feel pretty slim. 3 inches taller and 10 pounds lighter would be beanpole status.

F*** me he already has a highlight package, and its pretty damn good

I can easily say he's the most exciting prospect that we've had since Spezza, and he might be the reason that I step off the ledge and go back to being the fan that I was..

His hockey IQ looks simply brilliant, which is scary. A huge, aggressive, toolsy guy with a big hockey brain and a relentless motor is something that we and most other teams can only ever dream about.

Imo he could end up being one of the most valuable wingers in the league, based on where his game is at today as a teenage boy. Im blown away so far personally.

Yeah exactly. Yet half? of hf and sens fans were upset. Meanwhile I was doing cartwheels in my head.

I wonder if this injury stems back from Rookie tournament, where he missed the second game. He took a rather dirty hit in the first game that caught him up high. The bad news is that he may miss a couple of games to start season. The good news is we may not have seen Brady at 100% yet, with the exception of game 1 of the rookie tournament, and that is encouraging.

Devil's advocate: What if you play with your head down, and work hard on making it a habit of playing with your head up more? Wouldn't your hockey IQ improve with this newfound vision of the ice and of your teammates?

The way I see it, Hockey IQ is the general term to describe several abilities that are mentally related as opposed to skill who is more physically related.

Spatial 3 D awareness, sense of anticipation, quality and quickness in decision making, etc.., all this contributes in reading the play and having the vision to make things happen or just « defend »

Example, I think Cowen sense of anticipation wasn’t good enough (of course always relative to the NHL) to overcome the loss of overall mobility after injuries.

Seriously it doesn’t take that much to change a career at that level.

It’s like Kovalev who had a crazy dangerous shot but suddenly lost a fraction of second in quickness that made him a lot less effective and more predictable. Players knew he wasn’t going to be a threat as much as before to goalies so they could defend and anticipate against his playmaking more.

Professional hockey players also burn at least 3000 calories a day, little more difficult for them to gain weight, especially during the season.

Hockey IQ is one of those poorly defined terms that means something different to everyone.... so it's easy for it to cause a ton of confusion in these discussions.

A lot of people seem to use it to describe that ability that good players have to wait just a fraction of a second with the puck for a play to form or a pass to become available, as opposed to low IQ players who try to force the pass too early.

In the old days this was just referred to as guys being "good playmakers".

And if that is what someone means by hockey IQ, then yes it absolutely can be improved -- at the very least thru game situations when the player has the puck on his stick and has the opportunity to make a good play. You get that situation, you fail at it, you adapt what you do, you succeed a little bit, you gain confidence, you continue to adapt, you get better.
