another way to look at is, you're not blocking any shots if you blow the zone looking for a breakaway.
He’s doing what most team coaches instruct, , when team gets possession, one player blows the zone, to spread out the D, and create more passing lanes, or room to skate the puck out.

If he wasn’t instructed to do that, the coaches would be yelling at him on the bench when he comes off.

yes but if you're literally never in position to block a shot you will never block shots regardless if you're being dominated in possesion or dominating possesion.

and in the case of brady he's had some of the worst blocked shots rates of any senator in the last 10 years. like historically low. when that stat goes up and you visually see brady playing a more defensively conscious game, blowing the zone less often, it means something.

i don't put too much emphasis in blocked shots either but extreme outliers means something as well doubling your total/60.

clearly something changed.
Last year he was fifth for forwards in blocked shots.

Fun to note the trajectory of Captain Takchuk and Captain Alfie fan appreacition

Brady heavily criticized for playing for the fans, playing high event hockey, breaking from the system to be a 1 man show, now that he has been brought into the coaching fold and is playing by somebody else’s rules we see the praise for him, now everyone is happy with his game

Captain Alfredsson, heavily critized for never breaking out of the strick coaching system, never broke away to try and be a 1 man show, never cheated, never played high event hockey, didn’t try and impress the fans, was considered to disciplined, everyone loves him.

Brampton

Nice article from a Flames writer

"Did he consider wearing a bubble for the third period to protect his face?
I just know I couldn’t put my mouthguard back in,” he shrugged.
“I’m so numb that I can’t even feel my teeth anyway, so it didn’t even matter.

Brady has been friends with Backlund going back to the days Matthew and the Flames captain played on the same line.
He apologized - no hard feelings,” said Tkachuk.
Obviously he didn’t do it intentionally. It happens. If it comes back his way then I’ll probably apologize…just kidding.

Lol good stuff right here

He even got in a few scrums after! You could tell nobody was going to take advantage of the situation, but he could be a lot more sore today.

Over the years, I've found some of Tkachuk's goal celebrations to be over the top, but after his performance last night coming back when he was obviously battling some discomfort and winning the game for us...he can celebrate however the hell he wants to, even a Yakupov-like center ice celebration would be fine with me. What a performance!

So f***ing happy to see Brady pick it up and have an improved December. Comparing Nov to Dec is night and day:

In only 9 games this month (vs 14 in Nov), he has as many goals, is a +3 vs a -3, has spent less time in the box (2 mins vs 40 lol), has a better s%, a better FOW%, is laying less hits, blocked more shots, and has less giveaways/game, all in the same TOI/GP.

His November play was not great. December is outstanding. If he can keep this up the rest of the way, we're gold.

Brady with his 10th overtime winning goal of his career.
What a gutsy effort by the Captain once again!
Captain Clutch!
4th GWG of the season, tied for ninth in the league.
Leads the Sens in GWG this year.

9 stitches, one missing tooth, game winning goal Priceless!!
It was tough looking at his face after that high stick. It wasn’t pretty and he couldn't have been feeling comfortable. Hope he heals and everything is OK. Its hard to see him opting to wear a cage for a bit, but there’s merit in precautions & protecting his health.
