another way to look at is, you're not blocking any shots if you blow the zone looking for a breakaway.
He’s doing what most team coaches instruct, , when team gets possession, one player blows the zone, to spread out the D, and create more passing lanes, or room to skate the puck out.

If he wasn’t instructed to do that, the coaches would be yelling at him on the bench when he comes off.

yes but if you're literally never in position to block a shot you will never block shots regardless if you're being dominated in possesion or dominating possesion.

and in the case of brady he's had some of the worst blocked shots rates of any senator in the last 10 years. like historically low. when that stat goes up and you visually see brady playing a more defensively conscious game, blowing the zone less often, it means something.

i don't put too much emphasis in blocked shots either but extreme outliers means something as well doubling your total/60.

clearly something changed.
Last year he was fifth for forwards in blocked shots.

Fun to note the trajectory of Captain Takchuk and Captain Alfie fan appreacition

Brady heavily criticized for playing for the fans, playing high event hockey, breaking from the system to be a 1 man show, now that he has been brought into the coaching fold and is playing by somebody else’s rules we see the praise for him, now everyone is happy with his game

Captain Alfredsson, heavily critized for never breaking out of the strick coaching system, never broke away to try and be a 1 man show, never cheated, never played high event hockey, didn’t try and impress the fans, was considered to disciplined, everyone loves him.
