Matthew Tkachuk is a better shooter, passer and defender.

It's like asking if I'd trade Stutzle for McDavid. Of course I would. Stutzle is fast and a great playermaker. McDavid is on a different level and better at both.

In terms of happiness surrounding this team - I'll be happy when they make the playoffs. And if this team misses the playoffs for the 4th year in a row with Brady Tkachuk at the helm after changes everywhere else it's time to break up the core. Tkachuk and Norris out. Keep Batherson and Stutzle.

They have 54 games to change my mind.

Actually Brady is the better scorer based on age, he has more goals in his first 6 seasons then Matthew did.

If it doesn’t work out For you ,you’d make a good Panthers fan.

I would certainly hope a player who played more games and took 500 more shots in his first 6 seasons would have more goals.

10 more goals on 557 more shots for some context.

And we don't have to imagine how Matthew Tkachuk would have done on his next 500 shots. He scored 40 goals (not 10 goals) on 324 shots which is better than Brady Tkachuk's career year and a better 82 game pace than what Brady Tkachuk is doing right now.

What would other Ottawa players have done if those 557 shots were distributed among Stutzle, Batherson, Norris, Giroux, DeBrincat and others? I think it's very fair to question what this team would look like if Brady Tkachuk took fewer shots and was closer to players like Matthew Tkachuk and Jamie Benn with his shot selection where he still takes a large amount but he's not Top 5 for the time period of his career with elite superstars such as MacKinnon, Pastrnak and Matthews.

Everyone seems to be taking the default approach of "oh the team would be worse". I'm not convinced.

I mean THE GUY on a team. You're talking about the THE GUY in hockey or all time.

Alfredsson was our the guy, then it was Karlsson, and now it's Stutzle.
That’s your definition of “the guy”, guess everyone has a different one then.
I’m with DueDigence on the definition.
TBH I never heard of “the guy” until yesterday.

Lmao, you’re tripling down on this, he’s not MacKinnon, and Matthews, Sherlock. Guess what if he was , he’d be making 60% more money.
thanks for the humour though.

Oh and to this comment

Brady and the Sens don’t care if you change your mind, neither do most lol.

I think most people would build around him, but unless he is committed to staying here long term it is irrelevant.

He only has 3 years left, and his trade value likely drops by about 80 percent after July 1st if he asks out. People will say "yeah but we don't have to trade him if he asks out", but it never works that way in real life. It becomes too big of a distraction.

I would absolutely not trust a Tkachuk who tells me "Yes Mr. Staios, I'm so happy here, missing the playoffs is fun, no, my dad didn't tell me to string you along until my NMC kicks in." Which is not me saying the Tkachuks are bad people, but Staios would have to be an idiot not to see that they know how to play the game. Once July 1st hits, the balance of power shifts completely to Brady. To the point where giving the Senators a 3 team list is a major consolation. If you're Brady and you want out, getting to July 1st is important because it means you don't have to worry about getting traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets, and you can give the Senators a 3 team list consisting of Vegas, Golden, and Knights.

They are in a really tough spot because trading him as a precaution against the NMC is a crappy situation, but if they hold onto him and in January of 2026 he asks them to move him at the deadline, they aren't getting anywhere close to what they could have gotten for him if they decided to move him in January of 2025.
Why not trust them, Matthew was up front with the team and told them a year out, not signing a new deal, not like most players, ie Tavares.

So everyone is Brady Tkachuk expect for Brady Tkachuk who is actually doing Brady Tkachuk - doesn’t make sense to me.

You actually think Giroux Norris and Batherson can generate as many shots as Brady can - I don’t because they can’t because if they could they would have.

Maybe if you actually provided some sort of evidence that his shot volume hurts the team, others might come around?

Would Carolina be a better team if they were more selective in their shots? From 2021-2024 they have by far the most shot attempts 5v5, but the 8th worst sh%, yet they have the second best pts% during that time frame. Panthers have the 2nd most shot attempts, and the 12th worst sh%, but the 6th best pts%. Both teams are top ten in GF/60 too despite that "poor" shot selection. These teams like to get the puck on net to create sustained pressure and wear out the opposition. It can be a very effective strategy.

I remember like a decade ago when corsi and fenwick were getting more and more popularity these same types of arguments kept coming up and yeah all analysis showed the same. If you are consisntely directing the puck at the net scoring chances or not you are likely winning. I think it was ~70% of the time the higher Cori’s team won the game.

And the higher Cori’s team won playoffs series’ at the same rate.

The return we’d get before Brady’s NMC kicks in would be greater. I don’t think anybody doubts that.

Staois is going to have to win or get equal value if he were to move Brady this season though. Sounds simple, but it's probably easier said than done.

Senators may even have a chance at a divisional seed this year. There’s no really formidable teams that we are fighting with for a playoff spot. There’s a bunch of teams struggling to get to a .500 record. Boston has regressed. TBL is probably the exception. They are still decent and haven’t regressed too much. Senators would have to be more consistent and Ullmark would need to start a lot of games.

Its not an easy task, but its possible. It would make a Brady trade even more difficult to make as well. It’s a sticky wicket that Staois faces.

I understand the concern, but there's nothing they can do but wait and see how it all plays out. You can't trade him before the NMC on the chance that he might ask out later. That would be like breaking up with your dream girl because you're scared that one day she's going to break up with you.

What if they traded Brady for Matthew - would you be happy?

Matthew integral to his team success you could say?
I'd personally pick Brady. Matthew might be a better player, but he's a dirty player. BTkachuk has yet to do the sucmbaggery that MTkachuk does on the ice.

MTkachuk helps drive play in FLorida, but that team has a stacked forward core, particularly the best two way forward in the game right now with Barkov. Before playing with Barkov, MTkachuk was a playoff choker on CGY. A change in scenery, coaching, teammates helped him, but the way he plays isn't worth it to me over what we have with BTkachuk

I think it’s disingenuous to look at shot attempts vs goals in a vacuum, and say that if those shots were given to others that offense would be so much more productive.

Brady is a truck. On the boards, on the cycle, in front of the net. He creates good shots for others via possession, passing (which he doesn’t get enough credit for, dudes got great vision, he’s not just a meathead), and creating rebounds. He gets in the goalies view; he gets in opposing D’s heads.

Sometimes he just whacks at the puck into goalie pads rather than doing something more creative, sure. But that’s not easy to do while opposition has collapsed and are all over you. He earns those shots. I dont mind his shoot first attitude there and in other parts of the ice. Not sure how much criticism his game in the offensive zone can really be taken seriously in my opinion. He’s well above a ppg ffs.

I do wish he’d cheat a little less and focus on the d side (positioning, skating hard to backcheck and get sticks in lanes) of his game. But he’s drastically improved imo in those areas this season vs previous ones, while still maintaining good numbers offensively.

Overall a huge asset for the team. I just can’t agree with the idea that getting rid of him will improve the team, or even that his overall game is worthy of criticism. Let’s get this guy into some playoff hockey!

I think he'll hit 50 assists this year, almost did it two years ago. His passes in tight situations are great because of his puck protection.

I actually find that around the net with tons of traffic that Brady is quite creative. To me it's his best trait and I think he's in the top 5 in the league at actually making plays in tight with defenders all over him. It's a pretty damn rare ability.

Conversely he sometimes weirdly just shoots from distance with not much pressure on him. I find it strange sometimes but not really a big deal, or even really a small deal. As I said in a previous post pucks on net are rarely a bad thing.

I really like his simple passes where he protects the puck in the corner, blocks out the defender and makes a flat pass back to the point. Simple and effective. He makes some nice soft chip passes, and quality passes into the slot for chances as well.

Sometimes he tries to force passes a bit too much, feeling the pressure to make the play that leads to a goal rather than the high percentage play, and trusting his teammate to make the next play. Noticed that when the team is chasing, goalie pulled, that kind of situation. Happens less frequently as his linemates are better now.
