Dave Maloney was on new york sports radio today and was talking about Skjei has really developed a nice edge to his game to compliment his skill. In particular in game one when he took a real boderline hit from I believe Maloney said Ott. When asked about it after game Skjei said its ok he will get his. Skjei never took a reaction penalty and has just been clean physical the entire series.

Skjei and Smith seemed to have meshed really well together into a good pairing. Would like to see them stay together when/if Smith is re-signed.

With the playoffs, I've been able to watch all of the NYR games and must say, I'm very impressed with this guy. I've been lucky enough to see the development of some very good, young defensemen in Carolina so I now watch other team's defensemen even more in the games I watch. What I like about him, is many times I don't even notice him out there and that's because he's just efficient, but not flashy. I also see a bit of an edge to him that I did not expect which is nice to see in a young defenseman. He's got good size, but seems to play even bigger.

I watched him a couple of times earlier in the season and wasn't as impressed back then, so his game has come along nicely, a lot of it probably has to do with confidence, which is understandable with a young defenseman. Will be fun to watch this guy develop over the coming years.

Trade him and Miller for Trouba.

NO. why would you do that ? and what about salary cap ? staal will be here one more year with his ntc till 2018.

skjei is gonna be a legit stud. he's homegrown and he's affordable and playing huge minutes. to compete now you need affordable contributors. now.

miller continues to be the best of the young buck forwards. and has 1 more yr on his decent bridge deal. no way i move him or brady.

trouba is a pipe dream. a lateral move. weaken a strength to strengthen a weakness. plus when his deal is up he's gonna make big bank.

i think the near future for this defense is clearly 27, 76, 42 and shattenkirk plus 18 for another season.

8 is bought out or moved for cap hopefully freeing up 3mil. i hope 22 gets claimed by vegas freeing 1.6 mil.

5 is gone. his ntc is up and is now a mnt with 15 teams on the list. thats 5.5 mil.

if you add 6'4 ryan graves and his cannon shot and stay at home style next fall, that leaves one more spot for a righty 7th guy like kampfer who had less holes in his game like the younger clendo who seems like he's a goner.

trouba isnt happening.

the defense next fall probably looks like this right outa camp.

27/42
76/shatty
8/graves
kampfer

people still dont get sarcasm.....its incredible.

I think this one applies here

Skjei is why you don't flush first and second round picks without a second thought.

The success rate of late first rounders isn't a great as people think. Just because we manage to draft a guy like Skjei with that late first rounder in 2012, doesn't mean those picks are more valuable. And we did not really flush them down the toilet either.

2013: Part of the Nash trade. Do not regret that at all
2014: Part of the St Louis trade, put us over the top
2015: Was a conditional 2nd rounder that became a 1st because we reached the conference finals in 2014. Worth it
2016: Payment for the salary retention in the Yandle trade. Again, do not regret that. Not re-signing Yandle doesn't negate the immense impact he had on our team and we were one game away from reaching our 2nd SCF in 2 years.

2013: Kerby Rychel. Good AHL player so far but hasn't translated to any NHL success.
2014: Josh Ho-Sang. Future NHL player with a few character concerns, but we have good depth on both wings so it doesn't hurt too bad.
2015: Anthony Beauvillier. NHL player with potential.
2016: Dennis Cholowski. Way too soon to tell.

So our picks turned into decent players. Rychel is still young enough to make it, but who knows. Ho-Sang and Beauvillier look like they'll have decent NHL careers. Not saying we would have drafted the same players, but it shows the value.

The St Louis trade is the killer. He helped us make a run, but it cost it two picks that turned into good prospects (and both ended up on the damned Islanders of all places). As always, its a crapshoot but the picks definitely had value.

Who knows who we would've picked? We draft pretty well. I don't get the point in trading first rounders at the deadline. The deadline is a terrible market, we should never venture into it.

We also got a 2nd round pick back in that deal.

If he continues to play like this do they skip the bridge deal and go long term in 2018?

If so how does that play out if they use a ton of cap space in between?

I am surprised at how good Brady Skjei has played. I liked him more than most people here but he is much better than I thought he was going to be. If the Rangers make the Nash trade at the 2012 deadline, the Rangers probably would not have had the pick to take Skjei. The pick would have been sent to Columbus. More than likely.

Eric Staal would like a word with you.

That was such a stupid trade. It made no sense to make that sort of trade last season when the team was simply not good.

I liked the Nash, St. Louis and even the Yandle trade, but the Staal one simply made no sense to me.

Another one is the Ryan Clowe trade. That also made no sense.

I don't think the Staal trade fits that description, either.

They dumped two seconds and a promising prospect on a rental (one which didn't even address the fundamental roster issue) during a year they had 0 shot at the Cup. They proceeded to twiddle their thumbs while AV buried Staal in a depth role before letting him walk for nothing. If that doesn't count as flushing assets down the toilet, then I don't know what does.

It was a disaster of a trade, given all the circumstances. I'm not sure how much of an argument there is against it.

OK, if we're going to consider usage after the fact, we should include the Yandle trade as well. I disagree that they had 0 shot at the Cup, of course.
