Ryan Graves is a better player than Brady Skjei

Too bad there is no sound.

Just having some fun:nod:

He is farther along at his age than McD. Not only that he is way more talented. More physically well built. Tall, strong and agile and can skate. And look at his offensive game. He is going to be better than McD if he becomes steadier on D. McD is a tad overrated by Ranger fans. He disappears from the scoresheet way too much for my liking and I don't think it has anything to do with whatever cadaver they give him as partner. Well see after this offseason. I am so happy about Brady though. Damn he oozes so much potential. He is 3 pts away from averaging .5 points for the season. He is a future 60 pt dman if we keep AV's offensive system that fits him like a glove.

There is nothing overrated about Ryan McDonagh.

It's a damn shame that McD has and is being wasted, of showing his full potential by constantly being paired with terrible partners from the moment he came, except maybe G's first few years.
Agreed though, that his offensive game might be a little overrated around here. Looks to have all the tools, but sometimes it takes him a fraction of a second longer tp process and make the right play in the O zone.

PS

give him every second of ice time Marc Staal plays. Staal should never see the ice again for this team.

and give Smith all of Holden's ice time.

yep, clear cut top 4 at this point should be any combination of McDonagh, Clendening, Skjei, and Smith... There's no doubt about it.

Run any combo of Staal/Klein/Girardi/Kampfer on the bottom pairing, that's where these skill-less players belong.

So much better than last season. I did not think he was confident in some aspects of his game last season or early this season but he has come a long way. Really happy with his growth.

I don't think I saw Mike Reilly hit anyone once in his three years on the Gophers. Skjei wasn't very physical either but more so than Reilly. You always saw the tools with Brady to a very solid NHL defenseman but the offense he is generating this year is genuinely shocking to me.

Great to see him succeed though, always seemed like a good kid.

I remember watching a game where there was a scrum inform of minnesotas net and Reilly literally stood like 5 feet away as the other team just hacked away until they scored. Not only was he not physical, he didn't make an effort to play defense.

Anyone who says they were expecting this kind of production out of skjei is lying, but his game always translated better to the pros.

Makes you wonder how they went from McIrath to Skjei in 2 years.

The evolution of the game started accelerating quickly around that time. To find a similar transition in a short period of time, you'd probably have to go back to the 92-97 time frame.

The knock on Skjei was that he wasn't really an offensive defenseman, at least not in the traditional sense, nor was he a guy who really threw his weight around.

Generally speaking, a lot of people struggle to peg those kinds of defensemen. It's easy to notice the bruisers and the one's who put up points. The two-way types who simply do a good job of playing actual defense tend to get overlooked.

I'm not quite sure if Skjei's offense will normally be in the range we're seeing this season, or a bit closer to the 30 point mark. But if he can indeed chip in his 5-10 goals and 40-plus points, that's the cherry on top.

Admittedly..I was one that was predicting Graves would be better offensively and never say never but Skjei is just so incredibly strong ;)

What a pleasant surprise Skjei has been this year. Next up, Graves

If Graves develops and puts all the pieces together, I'm not sure his offensive upside isn't all that far off from what Skjei is producing. Maybe a little heavier on goals.

Both guys are similar in the sense that they were still putting the pieces together while working their way to the NHL. In other words, both guys numbers could look better at the NHL level, in the Rangers current system, then they did at the college/junior levels or at the AHL level, where they emphasis was on fine tuning the foundations of their game.

Weren't they partners for a little while last year in Hartford? I wouldn't hate watching Skjei work the left point and just feed Graves for one-timers

I mean if Graves can put it all together by mid-season of 2017-18......... :yo:

You HAVE to move one of Staal or Holden by that point. Staal will have been overtaking by two youngsters AND a 28-29 year old journeyman making $4M less than him (assuming Holden stays on the 3rd pairing)

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Graves-Holden/Clendenning

Assuming Girardi trade/buyout. You keep Holden as a stop gap for the 3rd pairing and let Graves ease his way into the lineup, and when he's ready you demote Holden to the 7th defenseman spot. Keep him for playoff depth

There's your defense overhaul

boy oh boy i need a huge heaping plate of crow on Skjei. Was never impressed with him, but the 2nd half of this season, hes been nothing short of the Rangers best defenseman most nights.

Better than McDonagh tbh.

Would have to agree with you. I was positive Skjei would be an NHL defenseman, but with limited upside. Probably a solid #4.

He's been amazing.

I thought he would be good (a #3 or #4) but I didn't see the offensive aspect projecting to his NHL game the way it has. Excellent thing to be wrong about.

I was on the Skjei ++ for Trouba bandwagon, but Even though RD is a need for us, Brady has been nothing short of penominal this year, and when you take their contracts and expansion draft eligibality in to account, I would have to think long and hard about a Skjei for Trouba straight up....

considering how bad Winnipeg's defense is, Skjei for Trouba would be a VERY good deal for them considering the expansion protection...

But I'm not yet sure I want to move on from Skjei now. WPG would have to add honestly... Trouba+ for Skjei is what I'd accept now and that plus would have to be a very good prospect.
