B. Skjei might be an answer for our PP struggles recently - he has a great vision and accurate pass - NY coaches should certainly test him out and give him a chance!
At least until we get a new skill player on this team to get some pace into to the PP.

He's so good at making the stretch pass. It's tape to tape almost every time. Seems like we generate a ton of breakaway opportunities and he's involved in quite a few.

think we're getting to the point where it's time to consider if Skjei should be bridged or not

As of right now, i'd sign him long term.

Skjei has come a long way. He was a healthy scratch a few times during his freshman year at Minnesota. That was a team full of upperclassmen. Kershaw would pan the selection because he had a friend who was a Gopher fan and he thought Skjei sucked. Skjei was the last cut on the 2013 WJC team. The team was in Siberia,Russia and he had to fly back home by himself on Christmas. That must have sucked. Ufa,Russia. Miller and Vesey were on the team.

I will eat some crow on Skjei. I was very willing to trade him in a deal for Trouba when Trouba was sitting out. And part of my rationale was that the Rangers had at LD in Graves, Gilmour and Day. At this point, he's firmly established himself behind McDonagh as the 2nd pairing LD.

I know it doesn't say much on this defense but agreed it's pretty awesome he's already our second best dman. Great pass on the breakaway goal to Hayes .

I've defended this kid so many times here.

hes really developing into a very solid player. hes made great strides.

hes not flashy and he does stuff in a subtle kind of almost casual way sometimes but he usually makes the right read, play and pass. hes so smooth with his stride that it looks like hes not working very hard.

hes probably our bess passer from the backend or if not, right on par with 27 who's been better of late btw.

defensively, hes coming around and developing more of a physical component to his game. hes a big guy and once he realizes that his kind of speed plus his size can be a weapon, hes going to become player more like ryan mcdonagh and that, my friends, will be terrific.

Well, I still would.

But as always that is absolutely no slight on Skjei. Who's been incredible.

Skjei's been a regular on the PP for a while now.

I watched a lot of Skjei in his freshman season. Not an encouraging sight.

He is quietly having one of the best rookie seasons in Ranger's history. He seems to be gaining confidence with each passing game. The left side is very solid with him and McDonagh moving forward.....now about that right side...

I'm interested to see how he performs next season. If it keeps up? Long-term. If he loses some of that secondary assist magic? Bridge.

*Either way, I'd still look to deal him in the off-season as an extremely valuable piece since he doesn't require protection in expansion but that's me*

Seems backwards to me.

Hm. How so?

Thought process being if he proves he's the real deal, get him locked up long-term. If we need to see more, bridge him. You run the risk, as you do with any bridge deal, that he lights it up and bites you in the ass on his next extension.

But that would make the answer sign him long-term no matter what, and I don't think that's feasible.

OK. By secondary assist magic, I thought you were referring to something more likely luck than skill, so I wouldn't want to lock him up if I feel his numbers are inflated.

Its also possible that while his secondary assists go away, his defense will improve.

Right now, he's pretty much acting as a Keith Yandle replacement, which is funny because while most people thought Skjei would be good and maybe eventually could be as good as Yandle was, I don't think anyone thought he'd replace his type of role.

Yandle and Skjei have the same amount of points, Skjei has played one additional game, but plays a lot less minutes per game.

Yandle is also having one of his worst statistical years in a while. He is on pace for 40 points, I'd imagine no one would have thought that before the year started. Brady is filling the hole Yandle left admirably, but he is no where near the player Yandle is, not now at least.

Some people talk about moving him. When have the Rangers EVER moved a promising young player on the roster for something less during the last decade+ of stability? The only time was MAYBE Dubinsky and we got something much better. Then Anisimov and we got something MUCH better. No other time. Callahan was an older established player by the time he was traded for St. Louis and change and he was not a player of Skjei's caliber. None of those guys were. So stop talking about trading guys like Miller, SKjei, Buch or Kreider because its just not going to happen. Add Vesey and Hayes to that deal too. The only guys that might get moved are Nash and Zuc for the right overpayment.

Salary cap says you can't keep em all

Let him play next year and then offer him the McDonagh special if/when he keeps it up.

Why would we look to move him . . . ?

I'd explore because his value is at an all-time high right now. Cost-controlled, and more importantly, is protected from expansion. Of course, that value also exists to the Rangers. But if you could get a 1RD for Skjei straight up, or Skjei with a small add, I'd do it.
