Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

He makes $4M and I am projecting he will get $5M on his next deal, that will cost us $3M more per year because we are only paying him $2M of his current $4M.

Woll was out number one heading into the season and that doesn't change because of a three game injury, not even a serious one.

I know he appears injury prone, but that was the case when they signed him to a three year extension.

It's not about the current injury.

It's about the 3 months he missed last year, and game 7,and NOW the current injury.

He's ALWAYS injured.

I'm a Woll guy he's extremely talented but it doesn't count or matter if every little thing takes him out.

If you are constantly hurt eventually you become a bitch boy.

He hasn't quite reached bitch boy status but he's on his way

I get that. I am telling you that the Leafs knew about all of the injuries you just listed and signed him to a three year deal. They are not going to change course on who is number one just because he is a week late starting the season.

I believe they may have felt that this would be a 1a/1b situation and Woll is 1a. They also think Murray is #3 and just not ready yet. We have four or five strong goalies, it's the best G shape we have been in in years.

I would JT at 4 years * $3M. The rising cap, he will be effective still and he has earned it. It's a good number.

I would give Marner 8 x $11.5M right now without full NMC or wait until after the playoffs to talk contract and be prepared to let him walk.
NMC is standard for top end guys.
Any idea who the highest paid player without one is?

That's a good question, I don't know if any high end players don't have them. I said not a full NMC and I don't expect him to sign it, I was just saying what contract I would sign him to BEFORE the playoffs.

A lot have NMC for the first few yrs then M-NTC at the end. Pastrnak, for example, has a NMC through 2028 and the it switches to M-NTC

Exactly, and thanks.

If we are going to be giving Marner a deal before he shows us what he does in the playoffs then we need a discount and an out, with the discount giving him additional value on a trade.

Seems reasonable to have that option, for both parties.

No, but he should have. He was the driver of the play. But assists are limited tools to assess someone's offensive contributions.
Honest question: how was he the driver? All I saw was the Pens player lost the puck, Domi grabbed it, and made a great move to feed Willy for an easy one.

how was he the driver?

To start the play Robertson had burst of speed and split the D (Zone entry). He didn't make it through cleanly and the puck went behind the red line towards the corner. He retrieved it, skated behind the net and passed it out front.

while he was doing ALL the hard work, Zone entry, Controlling the puck, his linemates had time to setup.

Thanks but we're obviously talking about a different goal.

On the first goal Pittsburgh lost the puck at their blueline, Domi jumped on it, and he and Willy scored on a two man breakaway.

What Treliving and Berube are doing is building a lineup with depth, balance, and flexibility. This lineup will inevitably fuel the culture of accountability and competition.

Having a strong fourth line is critical in achieving the type of lineup described above. In a perfect world we go into each game planning to play each of the four lines 15 minutes that night. Of course, it won't end up this way, a couple lines might be clicking, tilting the ice, and getting the chances. These lines will get more ice time that night.

It's interesting how this lineup looks if Domi ends up centering Nylander, this forces three lines featuring the Core 4 and that should be the goal here.

Knies Matthews Marner
Holmberg Domi Nylander
Pacioretty Tavares Robertson
Lorentz Kampf McMann

Dewar and hopefully Minten can factor into that fourth line and allow us to move on from Kampf without sacrificing our depth.

It's the same with the D. How long is it Benoit and Timmins as the third pair? Does Liljegren draw in for Timmins? Does Myers? Hakanpaa is eligible to return in eight more games. Do we have too many bottom pairing RD all of a sudden? Can we reunite McCabe and Benoit? McCabe and Myers? Can Liljegren, Myers, or eventually Hakanpaa go with OEL? OEL and McCabe is working well right now and I don't want to break it up but can each of them carry an effective pairing?

Reilly Tanev
OEL Liljegren/Hakanpaa
McCabe Benoit/Myers/Hakanpaa

Same as with the forwards, give the pairs that are playing better more ice time. Competition and drive to be better.

I think our goaltending is shaping up the same way. We have three, maybe four guys that could win NHL hockey games and no clear number one all of a sudden. Competition and not controversy.

Management worked pretty hard with PTOs, SOIR, LTIR, holding firm on Robertson, and well played waivers to give us more depth than we have ever had in this era.

I think Treliving is doing a good job and I wasn't always sure I felt that way.
