Unfortunately, there's really not too many other viable top-6 center options this offseason to use his money on even if we did buy him out, so I think it is likely he gets another season. However, even if he returns to what he was last year next season, I think he's still a casualty of the new CBA and gets bought out.

Agreed, but maybe not as early as next year if he plays better.

Richards is playing like absolute horse ****. Can't believe guys like Gaborik, Del Zotto, and Boyle are getting more heat than Richards.

Even if he was producing some points here and there like he was earlier in the year, it's still pathetic. His performance is an insult to fans who had the endure the dark-days at the Garden before Renney started revamping our attitude.

Get Richards the hell away from this team.

Next summer is the last opportunity to buy him out without cap casualties. If it does not happen in the summer of 2014, if not this summer, I will be absolutely shocked.

Doesn't he have a NMC or NTC for every year of his contract? If so they pretty much MUST buy him out next summer.

Looks to me like he didn't prepare for the season properly. In my own life, I've been in situations where the deadlines for important things were malleable and I took that as an excuse to keep putting off my preparation. I think that's exactly what happened with Richards during the lockout. Kept putting off the proper training because everything was up in the air, and then, when it was time for hockey, he didn't start with the proper foundation, and now he' suffering for it and realizing how big of a mistake that was. For me, it was the kind of thing I did once and then realized that the stress and frustration that comes with thinking that way isn't worth it. I hope to sweet baby jesus that this is the only time Richards will make this mistake. I full expect him to be in perfect shape and to be a different player next year. If he's not, he absolutely has to go. You can't have a guy with that contract out of shape and playing like garbage, especially when he wears an A and is supposedly a big voice in the room.

There is absolutely zero reason to buy out Richards until after next year. whats the rush? geez. Its like people think he went from a great player who carried us in the 2nd half/POs last year to some guy who is nothing better than a bottom 6 guy based on 25 games. I know its a shortened season and ****, but geez, there is absolutely no rush to buy out Richards. We're all frustrated with how the team is playing, but if most of us were the GMs the Rangers would have a turnaround every freaking year

and this is the guy who wears an A.

I gave Richards a few weeks, thinking he'd just take some time to get into it. He continued to suck. Then he started to look better, got injured, came back and had 1-2 good games. Now he sucks again. I am done with this guy. At this point he is actually offensive to watch. His signing is a complete bust and on the verge of being a complete disgrace.

Richards will be bought out. If he sucks THIS bad in year 2, can you imagine several years from now. My God....

And if next year he still sucks and we essentially have no centers ( how are we going to afford an even passable 3 C ) then what. Rip of the band aid this guy sucks

a complete bust based on 25 games (even less since he missed some due to injury?).. He was awesome the 2nd half of the season last year into the playoffs. A mesely 25 games is not a good enough sample size to buy him out THIS year. I agree if he's as bad as he is this year, then you absolutely buy him out after next year, but there is no rush.

and if he doesn't suck and gel with another team? you're kicking your own ass because you bought him out prematurely and replaced him with what exactly? Getzlaf is not an option anymore, so what center do you want that you can realistically get?

His overall body of work obviously merits him getting another chance . His contract and cap hit however severely hamstring us from being competitive in signing real depth players that we need , mainly at least one ready for prime time Center who can at least be in the Stepan range of productivity give or take a few points . And a couple of wingers one top 6 and at least one bottom six with some physicality and a modicum of scoring .
If you can guarantee he comes back and plays to 65-70 points and is an impact player problem solved . If he totally is a train wreck like he was MOST OF LAST YEAR and all of this season and gets hurt and we are stuck with that contract then we are effed just like late nineties early 2000's .

I'd give him next year only if/because there isn't much else out there. But after that he needs to be bought out, no question.

We can still buy him out after next year, it doesnt have to happen after this shortened season.

and I have no problem with that. I think Gaborik/Richards/Nash all playing together should get a FULL 82 game season before we do anything unless it clearly makes us a better team.

Oh, so there isn't much of a choice, then.

Regardless, if we want to win a Cup next year, he HAS to be better.

I think like you do, in this case. A lot of trade ideas being thrown around on this board. I still don't know what is wrong with the team, along with everybody else here. My gut tells me that Richards and Gaborik still know how to play hockey and this is going to turn around.
Sather does want to get a Cup, and I would guess that he was thinking it was not that far off, so we have to plug that factor into the equation.

What's the problem?

Isn't he 32? Its just another horrible big money long term deal given to an over the hill player by Sather. That simple, I called it before we even signed him, just another name to add to the horrible track record of our GM signing old players, Gomez, Redden, Drury, Richards in a league with a salary cap.

So, you're one of those people that waits almost 2 years to pat yourself on the back? And after about 20 games of poor play, no less. Lockout shortened season...the list goes on.

Im not saying hes going to last his entire contract, or even past the summer of 2014, but I do think holding out hope that Richards can revert back to his old form is the best play right now. Certainly a better decision than ranting and raving about how you want him gone with no suitable plan to how we'll get a top 6 center.

I have an idea to get a top 6 center to compliment , Stepan , hypothetically Lindbergh , Miller . You make a hockey trade . Doesn't have to be a flashy name just a player with good wheels that isn't crap in his own end and can transport the puck and distribute it to Nash .
