The guy is an NHL veteran, one of the highest paid guys on the roster, and has been through a lockout before. There is no excuse for Richards to be that badly out of shape.
I have been on him too for his play but you are getting confused though as the last lockout the league came back to a full regular 82 game schedule and full camp. Without a doubt no camp has affected players like Hank,Richie,Girardi etc. Anyway he does have to pick it up a ton and hopefully he'll be ok.

What happened to this guy? Seriously. Last season he had a rough start and then turned it on. But he shows no sign of ever being good for us again.

Came to NY for the paycheck and easy road to retirement.

I didn't realize there was a Brad Richards thread.... He's been fairly awful this season... Slow, ineffective, and can't stay on his feet... If this is indicative of what we will get moving forward then Dolan will need to open up his piggy bank and they should buy him out in a season or two. Inexcusable that he's playing/performing at this level....

He's been shockingly terrible at hockey. It hasn't been tough luck. It hasn't been losing half a step. He's looked lazy on both sides of the ice, constantly misses teammates sticks on passes, continuously makes horrible hockey decisions with the puck (even strength, PP, it doesn't matter), and (unofficially) is responsible for the most odd man rushes going the other way due to one of his awful turnovers. I don't know what NHL's scorekeepers standard for turnovers are, but they're wrong. He has like twice as many as they recorded. At least.

Do we still need to discuss this guy's play? It is obvious what will/should happen at the end of the season.

Biggest thing is...

His decision making.

Purely putrid. He looks like he's 15 seconds behind in the game. He looks like he's skating in cement, but he's never been that good of a skate to begin with.

Send him to Hartford for a conditioning stint.......until he can stand on his skates for an entire shift. Kreider could out skate this guy if he had to carry his game day salary in nickels on his back! :shakehead

3 on 2 for the Rangers in the 2nd period and Richards winds up, takes a slapshot, and shoots it right into the defenseman's leg. He has no confidence with the puck right now, no willingness to slow the game down and read the play.

Yup.
Rangers looked better during the games that Richards was out w/ injury.
Yup.

Yup.

I want him gone.

Gabby doesn't fit the squad, Boyle doesn't fit and appears to be suffering from a lack of confidence, MDZ while being better defensively is a rush oriented player, not a guy who is all that skilled when setting up in the zone.

But Richards...? Richards has been flat-out ****. Gomez/Drury/Redden level ****.

Richards can go, and take Torts with him.
Amen .
This guy is single handed my destroying this team . He is no longer anywhere near a 1C and the sad fact is besides Stepan No one in this organization is anywhere near being one .
He needs to go ASAP . The only prudent move to get a center is to sell off an asset mainly one of our defensemen to a contender . A Staal or Girardi will help put a team in serious contention over the top .

I went and read when we signed him and I don't think a single person predicted this precipitous dropoff. People were picking 3, 4 years after signing but not 1. He also never came close to delivering on his playmaking and PP promise in any way shape or form. All time bust contract. Provided some great moments last year though and we can get out from under the weight of his contract so this makes things very easy to deal with

I say give him next year to prove that he still has some left in the tank and that the lockout messed up his timing and overall play.

If he plays this terribly next year, we should definitely buy him out next year.

Unfortunately, there's really not too many other viable top-6 center options this offseason to use his money on even if we did buy him out, so I think it is likely he gets another season. However, even if he returns to what he was last year next season, I think he's still a casualty of the new CBA and gets bought out.
