Its nice to have the option in the back pocket in Summer 2014.

A ton can happen between now and then. We can speculate on a message board, but I assure you the Rangers front office isnt giving it any thought whatsoever right now.

I can assure you that they are giving it consideration because if they weren't, they wouldn't be doing their jobs.

Richards is playing for his long term deal right now. If his production tails off a buyout after the 2014 season is a no brainer. We knew that when we acquired him we'd get the production in the short term but we'd have to take on the long term risk (signed until 2020). If we can get out of the deal before all of our younger players get their raises, we've absolutely maximized that signing.

Nothing personal against Richards, I think he's played fine but we all know what having an aging center with a long term contract can do to our cap situation.

two questions, if we buy out richards, A. who fills his place? miller or stepan or another high paid center? and B. how do we compete without a #1 center thats as close to a sure thing to perform in the playoffs as it gets. i really dont think down the line his cap hit is going to be a problem, he can be traded, the isles traded a second just to reach the cap floor, and even in 4 years Richards will be somewhat worth trading for.

Well if he was bought out there would be another $6.67M in cap space opening up, so there's that.

Also he has a NMC, and is he's traded the Rangers will be on the hook for a big cap benefit recapture charge if he retires early.

Richards isn't a cap dump until 2017-2018. He'll turn 37 in 2016-2017 and still make 7 a year.

As far as replacing him goes, we might not be able to keep him anyway. We have numerous young players that will need to receive significant raises before that time comes, basically all of our good players. Whether we'll have the money to keep all those guys will be dependent on where league revenues go which determines the cap.

The safest bet is to get rid of him after next season, avoid the risk, and if we have the space we can go after someone younger.

If Richards was pumping out 90+ points and running a great power play I'd be singing a different tune but he's not. He's been a mid 60 point player for the Rangers and his shot totals are down right.

I was SO excited when we signed him, but right now, I hate this guy.

He looks to have pulled a Drury/Gomez on us. "My skills are about to completely erode so let me sign a monster deal with the NYR."

This sucks, and so does Richards..

This guy IMO is a carbon copy of Gomez. Cut ties with him now before it's too late. There will still be interested teams in his services, believing he is still a 'clutch', 'elite 1C'. Get it done Slats.

I've had enough. Buy him out after the year. MTL is not a better team than the rangers. Richards is awful. His passes are flat out bad and his decisions are stupid. He can't win a faceoff to save his life.

He doesn't have the skating skills of Gomez. He looks bad. Cut ties now.

I know its sacrilege to bring up, but Gomez was a vastly better skater than Richards.

I am now going to sacrifice a squirrel to awaken the spirits to empower this poor man and revive his career.

I wonder if there is any team interested in a $12 million dollar no-show.

The Flames offered more annually for Richards than the Rangers did. They'll definitely be interested in him due to the Feaster connection.

I say trade Richards to the Flames for 1st, Jankowski and Stempniak.

I'd also like to point out, because it hasn't been mentioned nearly enough for my taste, Richards was awful for like 60 of 82 games last year too. I think it got lost in the "adjusting to a new team" storyline, but it's very possible that was just the first step in his current and ultimate suckage.

Richards' timing is way off. I wish he spent more time on the ice during the lockout. He could have benefited from playing in Europe for a month or so. Too late now.

Thing is, hasn't Getzlaf let it be known that he would sign with the Flyers?

No, I'm curious as to where you heard this. Have never heard of a UFA announcing his intentions to sign at a specific club mid season.

Richards isn't playing well at all.

But its also plain to see that theres a ton of people around here that wouldnt be satisfied by any 1st line center. Sort of an "anyone but him" mentality will be pervasive.

I still think Richards makes a ton of you eat crow as the season progresses.

I'll gladly do it if i happens. Getting close to half-way through already. As long as you are willing to do the same if he doesn't get any better

I hope to god you are right.
