You don't get that kind of value without a bidding war. I'm guessing he had several nice offers.
It's an unfamiliar feeling as a fan to be on the receiving end of one of these trades.
But they can now pay Tuch's $10M with the cap room they've gained. Do you think he'd go to free agency regardless? Even if a team offers $11M, it's only 7 years so less money overall. Although it may be that Jarmo doesn't want to give that much $$$ and term to a 30 year old.Of the many problems I have with turning around and trading for Hellebuyck this is the simplest one…
Let’s say you can get it done for 20 and UPL and whatever mid asset…but you keep 4. Ok. Looks fine on paper because I’m ignoring the other reasons for this excercise.
You still have to replace Tuch and Byram. And you’re probably making the pick at 4 at that point so it’s not helping you do that soon. You avoided giving up more pieces on the roster to upgrade in goal…but the team in front of him is in desperate need of two major acquisitions that you aren’t likely to get.
Now if I throw in my other reasons it’s basically a nightmare.
Pretty damning message on Byram from a former WHL scout, both on and off the ice.
I'm not sure I'm convinced Jarmo wants to use the space for Tuch. The possibility it was a cap issue this year doesn't align with the reality that teams will find ways to sign their UFAs regardless of short-term cap considerations and sort out cap problems towards the end of summer, even if it costs them assets like picks. But they can now pay Tuch's $10M with the cap room they've gained. Also, Jarmo said in his ;presser that he and Lindy were happy with the 3 goalies so maybe they stay pat in that area and use # 20 for something else.
Only time will tell, but I think Power gives a lot of different players that freedom. Would I like to have kept Byram if there wasn't a cap? Sure - he's known. But my take is the sabres should be OK.Sorry. You have to do this trade but lets not act like there was pre December and post December stuff going on here. Bo was excellent and an important cog to our 2nd half success. We now can’t rely on 2 pairings to drive play and shelter our bottom pairing. Whether he was amazing or not, he was part of the PK and PP units as well. Aka we gave up a big piece to Chicago as well
I don't know. Taking Bjorck at # 4 would be my preference. Sounds a lot like Benson but at the center position. High IQ, skilled, high compete level, 2-way player. Not a rat but doesn't get pushed around. My initial takes upon seeing this when I woke up this morning (I am an early to bed and early to rise person...):
- Does 9:30pm in late June qualify for the "Jarmo After Dark" title?
- Like everyone else, I am stunned that Jarmo got 4OV, 45OV, and a decent depth RHD for Byram AND Greenway.
- There are a wide variety of ways that Jarmo can go. And none of the paths forward are without risk. It will be fascinating to see the path he chooses over the next 2 weeks.
Personally, I hope Jarmo is shopping the 4th, 20th, and 45th picks, along with a variety of the young guys, and is open to a bunch of different paths forward.
My tongue in cheek thought about the next big move for Jarmo:
He trades 4+20 for 1st overall to take McKenna to keep Terry happy in the event that they miss the playoffs next season.

Seems too expensive to offer 2 1st rounds for either one of them. They don't really sound any better than Crevier who put up more points than either of them last year and was -2 on a bad team.If Jarmo packages Mrtka + 2027 1st for a 2nd pairing defensemen, what defenseman do we want? Hronek? Pelech?
As both a Sabres and Sens fan, what Matt Cooke did to Erik Karlsson was criminal. EK was still a great player but his skating took a hit due to that injury.I can't root for guys who hit to injure. He's not Marchand - he's Matt Cooke. And the only real thing I ever liked about Evander Kane was he beat the crap out of Matt Cooke.
I think that other teams being interested in Byram, especially SJ who could also make a strong offer, really jacked up the price which Jarmo took full advantage of.I do get it from Chicago’s POV. Byram was a #4 overall pick himself. They were probably going to draft a defenseman at #4 anyway, but that D man would be years away from being ready to be their top pair guy, and there’s no guarantee he ends up being as good as Byram is now. Sure, thr guy at #4 could also end up eventually being better.
But instead of waiting and taking that gamble they cashed the pick in for a guy who will be their #1D right away and is still young enough to be around and in his prime for many years to come.
They need to get better now, not years from now.
I’m sure glad they viewed Byram as a #1 D though!![]()
And you have no idea just how one dimensional Carlson is at this point in his career. He has never been good defender, but he is poor, at this point. Much, much slower than Byram. His main positive is as a #1PP guy, but you've already got one, so I don't get the point of spending big on him.You don't have a full grasp of what made the Sabres playoff run successful. Carlson would be a good replacement for Byram. How much defense did Byram play ?, did you look at his data ? Power concentrated more on D last season and we all hope there is more offense upside coming, but TBD.
Crevier produced more points than Byram last season, played an average of 17 min a night, was -2 on a bad team, better defensively from what I've read. Who knows, he could be a great partner for Power as Power wouldn't need to shelter him as much. Now Byram is a better skater, don't know how much of a factor that could be.Only time will tell, but I think Power gives a lot of different players that freedom. Would I like to have kept Byram if there wasn't a cap? Sure - he's known. But my take is the sabres should be OK.
Draft at #4 (hopefully Bjorck for me). I don't care if they trade #20 or #45 to shore up the roster elsewhere, as long as they don't trade Kulich, Ostlund, or Helenius. So draft or trade pick?
Andre Tate: f*ck you, watch thisA lot of posters going after Jarmo & how he was sitting on his hands & he just goes Andrew Tate "f*** you. watch this"
Makes the Chicago gm look like a bigger idiot.makes this deal even more impressive
Yes, as both a Sabres and Avs fan, what Matt Cooke did to Tyson Barrie was ALSO criminal. As both a Sabres and Sens fan, what Matt Cooke did to Erik Karlsson was criminal. EK was still a great player but his skating took a hit due to that injury.
