Confirmed with Link: Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to Chicago for 4th Overall, 45th Overall, Louis Crevier

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Well i'm happy as Larry with this. When I saw it I assumed it was a move up from 20. The fact that we kept 20, and now have two first rounders is gold. If you can flip both for a bonafide player in/entering their prime then do it.
Or picking 4 isn't soooo bad, even though I thought we were moving away from that.
For me, having a top 5 pick is immediate grounds for keeping the pick and drafting. Depending on the draft after the top 5 to say top 10 it depends entirely on the player. 11 and onwards I’m 100% open to using it on a player if the opportunity presents itself.

If I’m Jarmo, my assets I’m starting with now, is #20, one of the goalies, Norris, Quinn, or any draft picks from this year.

After the season I worried that the team was at weird point with regard to their roster and options. They were driven largely by an active defense and to be honest some luck with the three headed monster in goal and surprise of the night contributing on different nights. However, there was no star in waiting on the farm and it did not look like we were in a position to draft one. The team also had a reckoning coming with contracts coming up to emerging players and paydays for Tuch and Byram. And we heard the refrain of internal growth, despite the fact that is not truly a path as development is a) not linear and b) theoretically applicable to all teams equally. And lastly they still faced an image problem, a poor ufa class and the legacy of the Skinner hit.

In a week they were able to rebalance the allocation of cap position wise, add cap flexibility, add draft capital beyond expectations and fill a minor need in adding a bottom pair asset on a cheap deal who projects to be a replacement for Stanley’s role at less cost and possibly more for 900k. And the draft and free agency has not yet begun. Truly remarkable. Now they could get stoned on their own stash and squander the position they created, it is after all the Sabres, but it showed why a move away from Adams was necessary. Adams did some good things trade wise and at the draft table, but I doubt he would have been as bold or as timely in addressing the issues the team immediately faced. Truly a coup. I think this also sends a message that there is a commitment to winning that resonates both internally and around the league.

If they move on from Alex they still have ability to backfill. Finding a top four d is doable if they use their new found draft capital wisely and while they may take a step back they remain a viable playoff contender with upside for the foreseeable future. I know what I would do next, but it is too controversial and I do not want to sidetrack to observation that it appears we have a hockey department again and it is to be taken seriously around the league. Kudos to Jarmo and his staff. Not all sunshine and roses but certainly not a bad situation going forward.

Apologies for the long post.

Jarmo sat back and had an auction of his smooth skating, 25 year old, cup winning, 23 min a night and 40 even strength points d-man. There were probably a dozen teams interested. Give me best draft pick(s), and a young D. My guess is he narrowed it down to teams that offered highest picks, could also take some salary back with no issue (Chicago is nowhere near cap so 4 mil is no issue).

Chi heard SJ was taking their guy at #2 and called and offered #4.

Somehow Jarmo squeezed the rest, maybe saying that other teams offered (2) firsts plus young D.

Byram does need to be replaced but my feeling is that the Sabres can almost wait until the trade deadline next season to really replace him. Top 3 will need to take on more responsibilities with Byram gone. Go and get a Timmons type next deadline that can play 15-18 mins, some PK and play with anyone. They can add a depth physical pk dman for 3rd pair or 7th D.

  • Move Tuch for something for the 8th year (Seattle)
  • Draft a top C (Malhotra) with #4. Now you have Helenius and Malhotra as potential 1C's.
  • Move #20, #42, Mrtka, Norris/McCleod/Krebs, UPL, for a Top line F & proven Goalie.
  • Sign Benson 7x7

My initial takes upon seeing this when I woke up this morning (I am an early to bed and early to rise person...):

- Does 9:30pm in late June qualify for the "Jarmo After Dark" title?
- Like everyone else, I am stunned that Jarmo got 4OV, 45OV, and a decent depth RHD for Byram AND Greenway.
- There are a wide variety of ways that Jarmo can go. And none of the paths forward are without risk. It will be fascinating to see the path he chooses over the next 2 weeks.

Personally, I hope Jarmo is shopping the 4th, 20th, and 45th picks, along with a variety of the young guys, and is open to a bunch of different paths forward.

My tongue in cheek thought about the next big move for Jarmo:

He trades 4+20 for 1st overall to take McKenna to keep Terry happy in the event that they miss the playoffs next season.

You mean when Adams did it regularly. Mittlestadt for Byram was a fleecing. The Peterka trade was a Darcy level fleecing

The difference was those two trades were really good months to years after the trade happened and nobody was saying it was a slam dunk win for the Sabres the minute it was announced.

And given how Kesselring was a nothingburger for the Sabres, I don't think Peterka for Doan is a fleecing. But, it definitely is a good trade for Buffalo.

Why give up that much for those D?
well it doesn't necessarily have to be that much for one, just those are assets he's already traded once for a D, so it's not out of the realm of possibility he will do it again

Could probably get pelech just for a 1st maybe less
