so, we traded a 4th overall pick who was part of our core for another 4th overall pick?

Good grief. Someone please give Jarmo a breathalyzer and a drug test

Jarmo is Tim Murray 2.0
Nah, he traded a 2nd pairing defenseman that wasn’t staying past this year, and in return received the 4th overall pick and another top 50 pick, and created an additional 10 million in cap space to be able to handle Benson’s nExt deal and have more room to make moves, all while not moving any of our young players, without giving up our other 1st rounder in this years draft. Also received a young defenseman that has potential that fills the void from the previous trade.

It is amazing how poorly some franchises are managed.

He won’t sign there. Edmonton will implode. These things are known.

Anywho, 4th OA for a guy we weren’t resigning in a year is fantastic. 2nd rounder (and shedding G’s salary) is also fantastic. Now, what do they do with that 4th? They could do a Helly of a lot of things..
Why wouldn’t Byram sign in Chicago? It’s his childhood’s favorite team, and they have role open where he can play the minutes he wants. Money will come down to it, but Chicago can provide a deal that should be enticing for him. Even if he gets a $3 million aav raise.

Yes. We were legit cup contenders last year.

It is the time to go all in, not stockpile again for the future

You have to be joking.

They didn’t dump him for a second round pick. Well they did…along with a young player and FOURTH OVERALL.

Picks can be moved for players the other way too, you know?

Letting him walk when you could get this return would have been the dumbest thing possible.

4th overall

Futures. Just as I said

The dumbest thing possible is trading a core piece for futures when you are a cup contender

I am just not positive about their future in general- I like Byram, have doubts about him as #1- and with Byram’s agent even if he resigns it’ll be at market rate. If all goes well I also think he’s easily closer to 11 mil.. but my guess is he ends up a #2 for a contender.

So Jarmo the Size Queen trades our top pairing d for another 6'8 Big Guy?
What a disaster, slowing the team down. Wait. What's that lump in your pocket Jarmo?
4th overall? And 45th!?! And you got a valuable return for Greenway? Cap space unlocked?
Ok, get in the sauna for a back rub you nasty li'l bugger!

This trade feels so unrealistic.
We get an elite elc player, solve the cap issues, replace Kesselring and add a 2nd in one deal?
I did not want to deal Byram but he got a better return than Eichel. 4th overall is crazy!

Larkin: Hell no.
Thomas: 4 OA in play if Parayko comes with him.
Reid: Meh, I'd rather take either Malhotra or Bjorck

. Buffalo Sabres: Chase Reid, RHD, Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)

Two things before we get to the Sabres’ options at No. 4:

I believe the Blackhawks were zeroed in on Stenberg throughout this process and that once the Sharks made the Eklund trade to acquire No. 9, it became clear to them that they were taking Stenberg at No. 2 and a defenseman at No. 9. That conclusion led them to pivot as quickly as they did today to pushing for Bowen Byram, who gives them an immediate PPQB to play with Connor Bedard as they push to get better. I don’t think they were prepared to wait two years for Reid, and maybe another two years for him to figure it out in the NHL. That puts you into 2030 and beyond before you realize the impact of the pick. Byram gives them a 25-year-old left-shot D now.

When I reached out for intel into who the Sabres might consider at No. 4, I got this back from a league source: “Think they might use it for something.” So this circus might not be done. I’ve been hearing the Penguins have been aggressive in trying to move up as well.

Now, if they do make the pick and the forwards go 1-2-3 (and everything I’ve gathered has led me to believe that’s the most likely outcome), I’d bet that they’ll take one of the D, and Reid and Carels are the most likely. And if it’s Reid, could righty Radim Mrtka, already in trade rumors, be on his way out as well?
