GDT: BOS @ CAR: Game 5

In addition to having been pretty good in the regular season, Boston is also a team led by heavily-seasoned veterans with a well established culture of winning. This isn't some 2019 Columbus pulling off the unthinkable, it's more like the Penguins kicking the shit out of the Rangers because at the end of the day they're still the Penguins.

Home ice means controlling the matchups and having a far better shot at containing 63-37-88. So far, that line has been the difference between 2-2 and 4-0.

I brought this up in a previous GDT. After all the changes and fun new teams that popped up this season, the Eastern Conference Semis could still be Pens, Bruins, Bolts, Caps.

My wife doesn't know this, but she's probably rooting for this outcome. It will cause me to watch much less hockey over the next few weeks...

That is what my issue has been on the road, refusal to mix up lines a little to get 2 shut down lines and a scoring line.
Yeah.

And it was entirely predictable. The one line that didn't change all season was our shutdown defensive line. Which, one one hand I understand, but on the other, kind of put us in a spot where that advantage we have defensively is completely neutralized in the playoffs because of the 2nd change allowing the opponent to avoid their scoring lines being on the ice with them. And we didn't do anything to see if we could potentially have 2 shutdown lines, even if neither is as strong as this one, in hopes of slowing down a 1 line team who just shifts them to avoid Jordo.

My wife, who really only pays attention during the playoffs, made a comment last night about how we don't have core guys like Marchand, Crosby, Ovi, etc and/or players (short of a few obviously) that have experienced the ultimate grind to the Stanley Cup. Players that sacrifice everything to make it to the end.

We had the recent run that took us to the ECF but were essentially toast by then. I mean, this is Raanta's first post season. It's just what it is. Eventually you have to break through and I think this team will. There's just no way to know if we have the core for it until it happens.

She also never actually said Marchand, just referred to "the rat".

Yeah, the issue with this is just that you don't until you do. In '09 this was Crosby/Malkin/Letang/Fleury. In '20 Tampa had just come off of an embarrassing sweep by the Blue Jackets and questions about whether they were only a good regular season team (imagine saying that now).

At the end of the day, it's a useful thing to have (you can't watch these 4 games and tell me it's not an asset to have Bergeron's and Marchand's experience, and not just because they are good players), but it's not end-all be-all. Otherwise the same team would win the Cup every year. I do think that every up-and-coming team starts to question whether the guys they have are winners until they win. We are no different than Tampa in '19 or Washington in '18 or any number of other teams.

That was my last point. 😄

The only reason the concept of Boston winning be an “upset” (lol) was ever conceived was because of our great start. At the end of the day Boston is still the monkey we need to get off of our back.

Luckily we have three games and home ice to do it.
I consider Boston winning game 4 a massive upset to be honest. With McAvoy and Lindholm out, that D group is AHL caliber.

Also Lindholm is out tonight as well. Zero excuses at all to not come away with a W in what should be a dominating effort.

From a non hockey board I frequent:

Reading multiple twitter posts that there are a bunch of Canes fans that were at PNC Arena on Wednesday that now have Covid. Lower section for the most part--104 through 106.

Dad went with me on Wednesday, and we were in the upper deck. He woke up this morning sore throat and coughing. Now taking an at-home test. I took one this morning--came back negative.

Yeah.... I've been seeing the hysteria over this spreading on Twitter.

Let's just put it this way. The people I've seen say they have it all admit to testing and testing and testing until they get one that comes back positive and then reporting that they were a part of a "super spreader event" and then trying to pressure the Canes and PNC into reestablishing all masking and social distancing protocols for tonight. I'm talking testing twice a day for 4 days until one pops and then not testing again.

I'm not saying it didnt spread at the game, but there is definitely an agenda at play here.

It’s a shame about Bear. You have to think he’s less than happy about being scratched for 5 straight playoff games.

I mean, it’s not like he’s outplayed either of Smith or Cole, but it will suck to see him likely develop into a 2nd pair guy elsewhere. I’m pretty convinced now he’s not getting into the lineup unless there’s an injury. Hopefully they can get some sort of value for him this summer.

There’s a guy on the trade board claiming to know Bear personally and he says he’s really unhappy with his usage this year.

Maybe play better? Bit disappointing as he started off strong but I wouldn’t be upset if we just moved on at this point. Let him go play for a worse team that can afford to give him more minutes.

Maybe he needs playing time to get into the swing of things?

I could understand it, some people cant just come in cold off the Bench like Stepan.

If you're not playing well enough to be an everyday player, you better get used to playing well coming in off of the suite. And if you can't do that... well... welcome to the AHL, kid
