The cost of dumping Backes was definitely less than the cost to dump Marleau. I think you can sum up this trade as basically a late 1st for Kase and Andersson to take Backes' contract. I'm not sure how this will go for Boston though, I don't think Kase is as good as people say he is. Kreider would have made Boston way scarier than Kase.

A late 1st is only "really just a 2nd" when you have a poor scouting staff.

Exactly. And why don’t you ask Toronto fans what we have done with their picks. I’m sure a lot of em are still salty about the picks we made who were gold. Anaheim’s scouting department is best in the business. The entire league knows this. That pick we just got may be a franchise defenseman or a winger you under estimated.

Good move for anaheim, axel andersson is pretty good looking. He can model for them and bring them more male fans

How many concussions has he had to date?

At least 5. He is ALWAYS putting himself spots to be hammered. He’s probably a better fit for the East. The Ducks are getting a lot of heat on this deal because the fact that he’s always hurt (and it’s the career threatening kind) clearly hurt his value. I wish him the best. Still a bit disappointed by the return, but it’s about what I expected honestly. Those injuries are no joke. And even when he’s healthy, he’s being overrated. Good player though.

The Flyers just got their best forward prospect 27th overall in 2017 (Morgan Frost). Going back further they also drafted Justin Williams, Simon Gagne, Mike Richards, and Claude Giroux between 20-30 in the 1st round.

Late-risers are usually the best bet at the end of the 1st.

Kase is still on IR by the way.

Yep. Sweeney expects him to come off Monday and practice in full.

Actually works out pretty well for the Bruins as they are on their western canadian road trip and would have needed to clear a roster spot for Kase.

You'd be good with your team giving up a 1st straight for Kase (and his 5+ concussions)?

We're not salty at the picks you made, if anything we're salty about how f***ing dumb Brian Burke was with his own picks and that he traded those in the first place.

I'm also very ok with Sam Steel for Frederik Andersen.

Purely in value, it seems reasonable. I thought his value before the trade was a 2nd and a solid prospect, so seeing him get a 1st isn't all that surprising. He's a young and cheap player who is good analytically and produces well at ES, I think a 2nd and a prospect is totally fair for that and I don't think a 1st is much different in value.

And Anaheim has a continuous track record of finding diamonds in the rough. Sami Vatanen, Shea Theodore, Rickard Rakell. Freddy Andersen. The list goes on and on. A late pick is basically a top 10 with Anaheim.

Anaheim is extremely deadly with any fricken pick you give them. The entire league knows this. That’s why they hate trading with us. They know that diamond could be Manson. Or could be anything. It’s worrisome I get it

I'd be careful in calling his advanced stats impressive. I know his corsi and fenwick look good at 53%, but they are heavily influenced by his 56% offensive zone starts.

I'm really curious what's up with that. He's missed 5 games with "flu like symptoms." Was he secretly concussed? Was Anaheim afraid he would get concussed before the deadline? Something about that seems off. Similarly Cam Fowler's sudden injury.

Offensive zone starts don't have a significant impact on possession stats:

How much do zone starts matter part I: (Maybe) not as much as we thought
How much do zone starts matter part II: A lot on their own, not that much in aggregate

Individual shifts are impacted, but the total isn't impacted. Which makes sense if you think about it. It's not "56% of starts are in the offensive zone", it's "56% of either offensive or defensive zone starts are in the offensive zone". Offensive zone start% does not include on the fly starts (which account for like 50% of all shifts) or neutral zone starts. You're talking about a 12% difference on like 25% of shifts, it's really not significant.

Steel and Comtois. It was a sensible move for both sides at the time and has turned out well for both in hindsight.
