Oooooh shit can’t believe Blackwood isn’t starting.
I guess they're willing to tank tomorrow night's game as it's a tougher opponent?

I can never make sense of their rotation with him, but I've recently started to speculate that maybe he got that random start against the Canes right before the back to back because it was right after the dad's trip and his dad was still in town and they wanted to throw him a bone? Because I was expecting him in against the Canes last game and he wasn't, but I was DEFINITELY expecting him in tonight.

I'm still pretty sure he'll play tomorrow night in LA since he's not in tonight.

I am very pleased to see him on the bench more often than not though. I was expecting stuff like this after the Boston game and Ruff's post game presser, but then they throw him out there against Carolina right before a back to back stretch where he was gonna play anyway. He didn't play, due to precautionary reasons.

Knowing him and knowing them he's nursing something right now (maybe the hand injury from warm ups in Detroit is still bothering him?) and good enough to backup?

I guess I just can't believe they finally figured out that he sucks, especially since his last game wasn't THAT bad.

Pretty tired of Zegras and Hughes being compared. I like Zegras but they're not particularly close.

Maybe I'm confusing Callahan with some other former Ranger turned commentator, but I think people here have actually liked him in his role.

I think some of the difference has to do with the culture creating the child entertainment . Bad things generally didn’t happen in US stuff. As you noted thr violence was cartoonish. If Speed Racer killed people (I don’t recall that but I guess I was blasé about it also) the kids in the original Willy Wonka also had bad things happen to them. Silly of course but I just can’t see those outcomes in a US story. There was a show I saw from England where grandma told the kids about an evil spirit that would come get them for some reason and it came and got them. I was a bit older when I saw that and was a bit surprised they killed kids and that was the end of the show. There are of course exceptions (there was a show about a kid who the mom wishes back from the dead but the kid sends back some sort of change king who ends up killing thr mom - maybe Night Galkery?) but my impression is we were kinder (no pun intended) in thr US with children’s entertainment. Of course our culture is much younger and we didn’t have a long period of time when we had to tell scary stories with dire outcomes so our kids didn’t go into the woods on the edge of town.

I didn’t watch Speed Racer so I’m going more by clips here. I watched 1980s Japanese animation, both the bowdlerized versions that were recut for US TV and the real versions later and the original stuff was sophisticated. Not George Bernard Shaw but more like live-action “adult” SF shows than kid cartoons. It was way way beyond anything Hanna Barbara had done, to say the least.

And it changed US cartoons. The X-Men cartoon of 1990s, which followed the comic pretty closely, was an early example of US adventure cartoons getting more sophisticated. Having continuing storylines, meaningful violence with consequences including death, internal psychology of characters, etc

But to swing back to 1980s anime, it took itself very seriously. There was a lot of broody philosophizing and 1970’s angst, anti-heroes and 1980s dystopias. Captain Harlock didn’t even speak much, he just brooded but he looked awesome doing it.
